I do need to get my ass over to Historicon at some point in the near future… P Paul, I've attended twice and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. First time with fellow Fanatic MarkBB and the 2nd time with Wf(S). On both trips battlefield tours were included. Cheers,

I do need to get my ass over to Historicon at some point in the near future… P Totally agree Paul, but think how much of your baggage allowance would be eaten up by all the armies you'd need to take! I must admit I'd discussed the idea of a weekend DBA or DBA/HOTT tournament with Simon, but he didn't think there would be a demand for it. (Though of course Britcon is run from Fri night to Sunday afternoon.) Also if you have between 10 -16 players, or more (which seems the usual number of entrants in the UK,) having lots of sessions of only 3 rounds could make it a bit unbalanced?

Rarely do we have more than 10 players in a game. I don't remember the last time 1st and 2nd place never played each other. Also the time limit is really discouraging for new or rusty players of which there is always a fair number of. Even though these are tournaments, they are still friendly games.

On the 2 occasions when I attended Historicon armies, terrain and peripherals were contained in a soft overnight bag which I took as carry on luggage. For all flights security wasn't an issue and the figures certainly piqued the interest of the guards both here in Australia and when I landed in the US. With regards to a 2 day tournament, there are a number of ways that you could attack it. When I run MOAB, the first day is 6 round themed competition either based on a troop type, a geographic location or a specific time period. The 2nd day has been a campaign with themes such as the Mongol wars, establishing the Shogunate in Japan or a Steppe theme where all armies have Steppe as their home terrain. This year I'll be presenting 10 scenarios based on battles fought in Britain, with me supplying armies and preset terrain, much like Paul Murgatroyd does. At CANCON the 2 days are divided into armies from Books 1 and 2 for day 1, and Books 3 and 4 for the second day. Cheers,

Hmm, I think Simon has struggled for entrants to this year's one day event at £25. As they are charging £40 - £45 to attend a two day competition at Britcon (plus £60 - £110 for accommodation, plus parking charges,) I'm not sure that would be the best place to try? On the other hand it may limit the number of competitors to allow a format similar to the one Tony is running, if that's what the aim is.

On the other hand it may limit the number of competitors to allow a format similar to the one Tony is running, if that's what the aim is. That may be a consequence of our geography. Many competitions are close enough to get there and back in a day, with enough time to have played 5 or 6 games in the day. I'm assuming that players in Australia and north America have longer journeys and, having gone all that way, are keen to maximise the number of games they can fit in. if we want to attempt a two-day competition in the UK, there is no getting round the cost of accommodation, meals and travel. After that, I think how one views the entrance fee is largely the psychology of the individual; either, "I'm already paying £200 for a weekend away. I'm blowed if I'm going to pay £45 on top of that!" or "I'm already paying £200. What's another £45?" (I realize that £45 is quite a lot of money for some people. But if cash is that tight, they probably wouldn't be considering an event that meant spending £200 on food, accommodation and travel.)

We travel 14.5 hours ONE WAY to make Historicon (Florida to Pennsylvania.) Once there we might as well play/run as much stuff as possible. Honestly, taking the time off from work is the biggest problem (not that I am made of money) as it uses up almost 25% of my vacation days. Wargaming is still IMO a cheap hobby.

The use of Britcon would be an interesting one. I can see many positives, in terms of the fact that it's set up for a multi-day tournament format like Historicon and may be relatively easy for us to work a programme in on that basis. To have one themed, 3 game, session on Friday evening, then three sessions on Saturday and two sessions on Sunday, would give a good degree of flexibility to players being able to drop in and out as they like. If you're coming for the Saturday, and staying overnight beforehand, then it's no extra to play on the Friday evening as well (assuming you can make it for then). Likewise, you may just be wanting to be a day tripper on either the Saturday (as I am this year) or the Sunday and this way you can keep costs down, if you wanted to, if that was an issue. The addition of the show, with traders, adds an element in that you don't get at many of our UK DBA one day tournaments - Hammerhead is an exception here and it's a big bonus to have this alongside the tournament. Being able to dip in and out and have the option to miss a 3 game session to have some R&R and see the show could be a nice addition too...
It would also be nice to try a mixed package like this, so that it stays fresh across the weekend. Sometimes, if you're playing the traditional 5 or 6 game format in a day and you're having a bad one (whether because of the army choice or dice luck or both), then it may be a relief to be able to write it all off after 3 games and switch to something completely different.
One to chew over...
P.
