I have three dba questions. 1. As a stand approaches a river at a 45 degree angle does the stand have to conform to the river’s edge crossing parallel to the river side or can it continue across at a 45 degree angle? I thought you can contact the river at a 45 degree angle but you must conform to cross the river since you can’t move down stream. 2. Army A has a SP stand in contact front edge to front edge with army B Blade stand. Army A has an army B PS stand closing the door on its SP stand. Then Army A then moves an AUX stand to close the door on the Army B Blade. My friend said the army A SP turns to face the army B PS and the Army B blade turns to face the army A Aux. I say no because they are already contacted in front What do you say? 3. a column of a spear and a ps has the spear contacted legally in the side by a blade and also contacts the PS. I say the spear turns to face the blade with the ps behind it. So they both turn to face the blade. My friend says the spear turns and the ps backs away.

Q1 The rules for river crossings are on page 9 - I assume we are talking about version 3? These say that you should continue crossing at the same angle you enter unless to line up with an enemy on the bank. Q2 You are correct - you do not turn to face if you are already in contact with an enemy to the front. Q3 You are correct. Only a third element in the column backs away. See top of page 10 for turning to face. Hope this helps. Simon

thank you
It was for 2.2 Plus but the same would apply I would imagine.

I am afraid that I only started with v3 so can't comment on earlier versions. I am sure that some of the other members have longer DBA memory banks than me and so will be able to comment.

I found the other post! Simon and I do agree But this is regarding DBA 3. Good catch by him that river crossing is on page 9 in 3, but on page 14 in 2.2. Smaller pages. DBA 2.2 1. This text seems pretty clear, why the question? "Troops that enter a river must continue crossing at the same angle or line up in close combat with an enemy element that is defending the opposite bank" 2. Elements that are in frontal combat do not turn to face flank attacks. 3. " If an element so contacts the flanks of 2 enemy elements, both these turn, the 2nd moving to behind the 1st. A 3rd element is pushed back clear. " Interesting difference between 3.0 and 2.2 here. If there were 4 or more in the column, in 2.2, the third and others behind are all pushed back. In 3, an element cannot push back elements behind it, so it is destroyed.

It has been a long time... but I believe Simon's answers stand for version 2.2 as well. You will find version 3 has some nice diagrams that will help answer some of your questions. We also have a nice FAQ on version 3. Find it here... ancientwargaming.wordpress.com/dba_resources/(as I shamelessly plug Keith's website!) Joe Collins
