All, is it correct that if there is a gap between a friendly Element and say a wood, that if this gap is just over a base width that my LH element can pass through the gap for full move distance, even though on the turn the rear corner of the Element passes through the wood.
Does the same theory apply if I have a 2 LH column, and the second elements front edge actually passes through the wood. But is doing Follow my leader to the front edge of the first element in column that has missed entering the wood.
Whilst at it, and for clarity, if the LH column stops with the front edge of the first element of the column outside the wood, If contacted and in combat to front then the LH fights as in good going, but outcomes take into account that in bad going?
I had thought that if an element had any part of itself in terrain, ie the LH in a wood, then only 1 base width of movement is only allowed until the element is completely clear of the wood.
I had a correction on the uphill combat factor at PAWs last week, when in a combat I thought I was up hill of opponent, I was, but the front edges where combat was occurring was on the flat, therefore not considered up hill for combat. That was buried in the terrain section of the rules...

I think I can help, at least a little bit.
The relevant section seems to be on page 9 paragraph 7:- “Rear corners [9.7]: Since the men represented by an element are not necessarily in a rigid permanent formation, one rear corner may pass through another element, or an enemy TZ, or a terrain feature, while the element’s front edge wheels (see diagram 6c) or pivots (see diagram 12a).”
The key words here are “pass through”....this seems to imply that you can move a rear corner through terrain during a move, and thus avoid the terrain movement penalty, but not stop or end the element’s move while in there. If you end the move inside a terrain feature, even by a little bit such as a rear corner, then you have entered that terrain and suffer all the movement and combat penalties.
As for a column following the lead element...I don’t know. A strict reading of the rules seems to imply that you cannot because the front edge would enter the terrain. Of course you could always move each element separately and end the bound in a column, but that would cost an extra PIP.

Stevie thanks. Yes pass through. But not stop. Ok. With the combat just as long as and element is at leat partly in the terrain it fights as in that terrain, even though the front edge of the element is potentially fighting in good going.
For the hill question, the element was on a difficult hill, so is assumed to be in that going, but was not uphill for a combat factor as the front edges where lined up were on the flat and in normal good going.
Love the nuances.

Yes, I’m afraid that having your LH rear even partially inside a difficult hill but their front edge on the flat in good going is like ‘ having the rough end of the pineapple’ as our Australian cousins would say. But since you mentioned LH in harsh terrain, did you know that LH can move 4 BW in bad going? What! Yep, they can...but only when they flee:- “[12.6] Fleeing: A fleeing element turns 180 degrees in place ( unless shot at least partly on its rear edge – see FAQ), and then moves straight forward without turning for its full tactical move distance for the going it starts in. It then stops until making a tactical move or conforming. [12.7] It stops before completing its move and lines up if its front edge (or front corner only) contacts any of:- (e) for troops ( other than Psiloi or Light Horse) any bad going (except marsh) it is not already at least partly in ( see diagram 21b).” So, LH and Ps that start in good going flee at full speed, and are not slowed by terrain.
