I'll be buying what I lack for my first two armies at Cold Wars. I'll be getting English and French medieval from Essex.

Haardrada - if you can figure out how to post a picture it would be nice to see those Naismith Tibetans as there are no pictures on his website. I would like some dismounted cataphracts down the road. I'll post a pic or two on the facebook site when they arrive as I can't figure out how to post on here.I do have some photos of some of this naismith range and can send you them via email if you message me your email address.😊

Having recently finished a new army (I/5a Early Elamite) and renovated a couple Meso-American armies, it was time to order a new army: II/61b Mu-jung Hsien-pi. Or, as I'm calling it, the "Moo"-jung, what with its bovine, disguised-elements gimmick. Like many of you perhaps, I spotted this gimmicky army soon after getting my hands on Purple. But, with no dedicated Mu-jung range available, I've pondered a few times just how to build this quirky army. Here's my solution. All Essex 15mm. - Cataphracts -- Since the Commentary suggests that the Cataphracts "are assumed to be similar to those of the Northern Wei", and Essex makes a Northern & Southern Dynasty range, PCH1 fits this bill nicely.
- Light Horse -- No way. With options for either 6Cv or the Disguised Hordes, I would never use the LH. Didn't buy any.
- Cavalry (6Cv) -- The quilted caparisons on these lance & bow armed cavalry (PCH10a and PCH11) are what sold me on this range. No solid justification other than being contemporaneous --and looking spiff.
- Solid Blades -- The list defines these as "Chinese-trained". If one also assumes Chinese-equipped, then PCH4b seems plausible. Oh, and PCH12 Foot Officers for added visual interest.
- Solid Crossbows -- Ditto so went with PCH5. A pack of PCH4a will provide a std bearer for all eight solid Foot elements.
- Psiloi -- PCH7 with extras as Camp Followers.
- Solid Hordes -- Essex Generic Chinese Peasants CHO18. If it works visually, each Horde may also sport an ox and slave figures from XEQ3 as the perpetrators of the dust blowing ruse, their work now done. (If it doesn't yield the right look, I'll just create a vignette for them in the Camp.
One never actually needs to deploy "women mounted on oxen", etc. That's the disguised element thing. In some games, I'll place the 4x6Cv, only to reveal that they are actually 4x7Hd on the 2nd Bound. In other games, they'll remain as 4x6Cv. Pretty simple, really. Pretty expensive too! 36 cavalry figures alone, but an army with Cataphracts, double-deep Cav, infantry with Flank Supports, AND the disguised Hordes gimmick, should offer lots of painting & gaming entertainment.

An interesting army Paul which should offer some interesting games.I too had tried to weigh up doing the army and with what figures and chose the same range but looked at using PCH9 as the rear rank of the 6Cav...the cost did put me off.

Interesting army Paul.
Planning Northern and Southern armies, this will provide something else to consider.
Will have to look at the packs I got from FRP when they were clearing out their Northern and Southern packs (and later all of their Essex).
I may have enough to do them without picking up any more, although I think I am going to be short - more infantry than horse.
As to buying I am looking to put in an order to Viking Forge for some Sassanid horses for clibanarii I got off TP that came without as well some for some other odds and sods to make elements of various figures picked up second hand. Want to get some 25s for the nieces and nephews to use in the Dungeon game my brother got for them rather than having to use markers. VF is reasonably cheap so can kill two birds with one stone.
Then an order with Mick Yarrow for some ellies, Assyrian chariots (I got one in a batch of second handers and would like to have an army's worth at least), and perhaps some Egyptian quiver carriers (haven't seen them anywhere else). I really like the TTG elephants and have been on the verge of an order for some time. Strengthening pound is a good excuse.
Depending on how the conversion effort goes with the Essex bodyguard spears to axemen, may be an order to Scale Creep for some Gladiator OMK axemen.
And finally, there is Mantics sale - I have been regretting not getting more of their zombie dogs for my HOTT Undead - might take advantage of the sale.

I have now just about assembled the figures from Forged in battle, Donnington and Lancashire games to make up a Dacian (with Sarmatian allies) and Ancient German fast warband armies. I will probably end up sharing a few elements between the armies but I guess they didn't look that different (apart from falx men) in 15mm at arm's length!

Just ordered and awaiting delivery a 15mm British and French army for the War of the Spanish Succession from Irregular Miniatures. I will be using the DBX 3.0 1700 to 1850 rules.
In fact I have ordered one of their Army packs but the content gives me just about enough figures to create two 12 element armies. I can expand later if I so wish.
I am now converting all my 10mm Armies to a larger scale.

This seems to be infectious. I have reached the half way mark painting the Middle Saxons and will most likely order some ‘filler’ for the collection. Priests, to serve as ‘scatter material’, more livestock, ox carts and archers for both sides (Vikings + Saxons), all to be ordered on Donnington later today.

An interesting army, Paul. ...the cost did put me off. At $120 USD, the "Moo" Jung might be the priciest in my collection They better not be Wankers! (Grins.)
