I thought I might share these photos from the Gallo Roman museum in Lyon - highly recommended as are the two amphitheatres. Food and wine excellent too! One of the photos is of a cataphract. Regards Simon

¿Is this an evidence of presence of chatapracts during the Late Imperium in Gallia? I had no idea...

Simon what is the date of the cataphract?
Could it be of an early Contarium (not sure if correct spelling). These were ordinary Roman cavalry that discarded their shield, and carried a Kontos in both hands like a Sarmation.

David - I am afraid I did not note the date of the carving - but is interesting to note that there does not seem to be horse armour, possibly confirming your hypothesis. I do recall that quite a lot of the stuff on display was fro the earlier Empire period - eg the legionnaires with the classic oblong shield and the declaration of Claudius.

If it is 5th century is it Roman at all? Has somebody defaced in a nice way an old Roman tombstone, for practice, during the 5th century? Could it be a Roman/Byzantine, that might also make sense.
