This first attempt is linked to my recent painting of a 28mm early German BIG DBA army and wanting to create three camp bases using wagons as the focal point.
I bought several 28mm wagons from Warbases, their Peasant cart 2 to be precise, with a view to modifying it. (Photo of their model included for comparison.) I had not seen it at a show so I was unclear about its interior or exterior dimensions, it comes with interior about 25mm wide and sides about 1cm in height (I have not measured just my estimate from work below).
Using a slightly modified original Warbases chassis, as my base, I added new sides and end pieces (from mdf and card pieces) to create a higher sided wagon. I needed to make the interior wider (or deeper) to be able to place a DBA camp followers base, (6x3cm blank included in photos to help with idea of model size), as it was too narrow in its original form to take a 3cm base depth.
I succeeded in making the interior wider by removing the original frames to hold the original sides and building out the width slightly based on their axle pieces protruding at rear. But I made this prototype interior just 6cm long! So a rather tight fit when trying to insert a camp follower base of 6cm.
This needs to be corrected by making the long sides just a mm or two longer and taking the short box side (at the shaft end) further out covering the whole of the original chassis (which in this attempt still protrudes a the shaft end see photo).

the end result with a big 25mm figure inside for sizing
the wasbases website image of their kit made up
my added parts in situ, including a blank 6x3 base (camp followers size) for comparison
the extra space at shaft end in this photo, so I can lengthen my long side pieces (For ease of modelling in this attempt, I used two 6cm x 2.5cm mdf bases that I scratched / scored before assembly to later act as wood grain or gaps between planks in long sides! But these pieces need to be fractionally longer to allow a 6cm wide base to drop in with ease.)
