Hello all, I am new to DBA and wargaming in general. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions but for now my biggest curiosity is if it's kosher or common to match up armies that never historically had any contact. Either armies that are not listed in the rules as enemies or even armies from different time eras. Will there be any strength issues. Like are armies elements chosen specifically to make a good historical match-up and if you break history could one army be way more powerful. A great example is my Overseas Hoplite Mercenary army vs my Proto- Toltec army going to potentially break the game.

Folks do it all the time, but I don’t like it personally because armies are more matched against their historical opponents

Welcome to Fanaticus Xenophon. I think you’ll find unhistorical match-ups is pretty inevitable (although historical ones are better). After all, your local opponents might be interested in different periods than your own forces. And in an ‘open tournament’ type competition, anyone can usually bring any army they wish. Fortunately, this is not a problem with DBA. As far as the rules are concerned, a Blade is a Blade and a Pike is a Pike, no matter the period. So an early Sumerian Pikeman from 2600 BC fights exactly the same as a Swiss Pike of 1500 AD, and this applies for all the DBA troop types. “Change the name but they stay the same”, even if they look different. ...it is not easy to find a historical opponent unless in your town is a wargaming club. But do they playing DBA? But you don't need historical opponents for DBA. To learn the rules and the streng of your army it could be interesting to play at tournaments...

Thank you all for responding. I have only played against myself and I figured I aught to at least how others play.

I much prefer real matched enemies but me and chums often have classic match ups between, NKE and British. Hundred years war French have fought the Philistines etc and my Orc and Goblin forces have taken on the role of the Mongols previously. Welcome to the forum and happy gaming.

Hi Xenophon as others have said, it happens all the time…and is especially prevalent at tournaments where no tightly specific time period is specified (Open tournaments eg). Between friends we usually try to keep as historical a match as possible, but we’re lucky as we’ve been collecting armies for a while and have plenty of choices. The rules don’t ’break’ for non-historical matches… unless you start to analyse the details out of context -“this WotR fully plate armoured men-at-arms unit is far tougher than that NKE blade unit with hide shield and kopis” will only give you grief…a blade is a blade. Keep that in mind, and it’s still a fun and extremely well built game.

Salutation, Xenophon, and welcome !
As I've said before; "It's all a matter of big knives, sharp sticks, monstrous beasties, infernal machines, slings, arrows, and outrageous fortune."
There are purists who disdain anything but historical matchups, but you cut potential matchups and games down that way - and maybe get bored before the next army gets painted.
Mayhaps you can drop a note in the 'Opponents Wanted' section, see if other DBA'rs in your area.
Good luck and good gaming !
