Part of the issue I think that a lot of players have with Barkarese is the fact that, as an American student of history (1st degree around the corner!), he seems to not use proper grammar. In his serials for example, he does not use commas. This is the one major issue I have. If he refuses to use a table he should at least use commas in a serial as it is much easier to take in. Even the Oxford comma (darn Brits! this threw me off at first with Robert Service). Also, when there are several "and"s in the same sentence... Tiny rant over.

Reminds me of the Little Boy at school who tells his teacher "My brother don't like football, like what I do" The teacher replies "Where is your Grammer?" Boy thought for a moment and said "At the cinema with me Grampa!"

PB is old fashioned and will never (tempting fate) use bullet points, unless he has no other option.
English is a problem, PB is 85 I think, at 69 I am very aware that I do not understand English, I come across words that are obsolete that I learnt at school.
The other big problem is if you use English-English or American-English. Many years ago PB decided to use average 233445 dice, as well as normal 123456 dice, at that time the Americans thought Average dice were 123456. Not that long ago I had a discussion on Fanaticus about dice bias, a Canadian gentleman had not come across its use the way I used it.
The main dictionary I use dates from circa 1900-1910 I think, it is after introduction of khaki in the Boar War and before World War One.
However, that said, I know what you mean.

As a soon to graduate student of history, I hope you didn't write like this in your exams: Pot & kettle methinks.

I do not write online posts, especially in a forum, that hold the same level of editing and thought processing that university work does. I don't find any particular issue with what I wrote, so I can't quite say why my post, being a "winking" jab, causes such scrutiny. Seeing as you don't know me, my University, nor my levels of achievement, your post, "I hope you didn't write like this in your exams" is quite an unwarranted insult. I do still, and will always, accept constructive criticism and advise. Let me be passive aggressive here. Since my writing is clearly elementary and lackluster, can you please inform me how to change my post to make it correct? That is the only way to improve writing which all students are constantly doing.

David Constable Yes, I imagine that is a fair part of it! It is funny you mention that, recently I have been looking at 18th century newspapers and letters from the colonies. They do read in similar fashion to Barker. He writes more "classical" English I guess I would call it. It's still English, just takes me longer to decipher The American-English issue is interesting and can cause some confusion.

Like I said, it was very late night I do indeed mean what I said. Please stop assuming, as it is not fair to anyone. An old phrase I have heard many times: "To assume is to make an ass of yourself"

I believe this may get a little toxic, and not helpful. Best to let this rest now.
