So, DBA et al, like other position-oriented ancient battle games uses the tension of numbers v. command control to create problems for the player; the classic issue being an open flank, where one's opponent is even just 1 Unit wider and overlapping your own battle line.
Given that it is very important to try and protect the last unit in the battle line from being flanked, enveloped, etc, what are your favorite strategies in DBA that will help me do that?
This already assumes that I can't protect my flank on impassible terrain...it is open and the enemy battle line is wider than mine!

Recalling the Battle of Marathon, the Greeks thinned their centre to match the Persian line. One solution: Match your opponent’s line and form three groups with a 1/2 BW gap between groups. This will delay the inevitable by a turn. Another:Make your opponent work for his meal and echelon your line back. I’m no expert by any means but I’ve often thought I had the advantage with an extra unit in my only line to discover my opponents line ensured as it closed their last man will lock down two units. This means they can generally choose which way their line slides as it makes contact or at the very least ensures I can’t close the door at contact because it’s not entirely on the opposing unit’s flank.

True but a lot can happen in a turn and it depends on how quickly you close; make the position equal and you can choose the direction of the slide. Not necessarily a game winner but buys you time. |

put your fast LCh, HCh, Kn, Cv, LH, Ax, Ps or 3Bd into the second rank,
so they may rush to that flank where they are needed.

Admittedly I haven’t seen as many games on those on here, but the ones I have seen I was surprised to see that none of them ever had a reserve. Generally just 12 elements in a row and the whole game plan was trying to get match ups against each other. |

...OK you've seen mostly beginner's games. However, experienced players try to get the best out of the army used. In addition to combat, the terrain must be put to good use. You also need to know your opponent's strengths and weaknesses...
