Macbeth has just mentioned this in replying to a post in the DBA Facebook group.
"The other twist I use is to call a dribble stop.
When time is up I call 'cease all moves now, adjudicate any shooting and combats. I find it preferable to 'Do not start another bound, which prevents suicidal charges by the bounding player because they know there will be no comeback in the next bound."
I wondered whether it might be worth trying in competitions here in the UK.
(Of course, suicidal charges can be exactly that if one's Kn(G) then ties in close combat with an element of Blades.)

I did wonder about the title of the thread A tenner says stevie won't be able to resist. That aside, what do you think? Worth trialling?

Since my illustrious name has been mentioned… I do seem to remember that at the “Steel Warriors” tournament there was a round where a game always ended after the Invader’s Bound. That ensured that both sides got the same number of rounds (as Defenders move first).

I like the idea a lot. I don’t… I’m half way through moving, I’ve moved an element into front contact and about to move another into flank contact when I’m told I can’t move any other elements and have to fight as is…great… P

I don't fully know what I think about this. At Britcon a couple of weeks ago it was "the next bound will be the last". This seems quite an advantage to whoever's bound it randomly is. The dribble stop produces an even more arbitrary advantage in the opposite direction, as paulisper points out. I think the intermediate solution - "finish the current bound" - may be the most balanced. Am I right that that's what they do at PAWS?

Paul H Britcon varied between ‘finish this bound’ and ‘next bound will be the last’ dependent upon how much time remained… a bit random, depending upon how harassed the umpire was at that point 😉 P

The umpire showed no sign of harassment.

Never played in a DBA tournament, but I have played in a lot of Magic: the Gathering tournaments over the years. The usual procedure there is that time is called after a certain period (usually fifty minutes, which is enough time for most players to conclude a best-of-three match) at which point the active player finishes their turn and there are five additional turns. (So the person playing when time is called will get two more turns, and their opponent will get three - after which the game is a draw if no one has won.)

The umpire showed no sign of harassment. He harassed me by failing to roll 1's

Musing on the subject… I guess both generals should know the storm is coming or the sun is setting or whatever… Fix a number of bounds after the time all? (kaiphranos) Fix the number of PIPs rolled after the time call…regardless of what combinations of rolls by either player reaches that total…and no use of any “remainder”? The difficulty for the Tournament organiser is timing the absolute end of a round…

The curse of tournament gaming...
what a rule means, how it is used from one venue to another, or even one game to another, players playing at different speeds, how and when to call time (a BIG clock on the wall and a pre arranged time at which the game ends - of course this goes back to other issues like player speeds).... All to be counter balanced by the 'bon homme' that a good natured opponent, or an enjoyable game, or fun tournament, or relaxed but exciting venue etc., can create....

A time limit works best, I think. The point system we use at Ulm favours those fast and decisive players who finish their battles before "sundown". Because unfinished battles, let's say 2 to 1, simply won't bring in enough points... This heightens the tension of the game. Shall I play fast and risky, rushing on my attack, or shall I play it safe, stay defensive? (Sometimes a mixture of both is just the thing.)
