I have been able to get hold of some more secondhand, old style 25mm Sassanids, mostly painted in dark earthy colours and some unpainted. (I think they are all old Minifigs, mostly from period of thinned spears!)
I have repaired a few (and converted a few more to make up other types) and (re-)painted and rebased them all, generally brightening them up; in keeping with general idea that a variety of woollen dyes, or coloured cloth for appliqué style embroidery, would have been more available in ancient times than perhaps believed by the 1970s wargaming world. I haven’t listed my evidence base for this but there have been mix of finds of coloured woollens across wide area of early history and work by re-enactors in several countries to show what could be done with mixture of vegetable and mineral dye processes. (Although poor lighting for my photographing means these figures still look dull!)
This time I have added to my existing Bow psiloi and Spear armed levy (Horde) with slingers, and other foot variations giving me more Levy, and some hillmen to add to the ‘peltast’ style infantry dubbed Auxilia (either 3 or 4 foot per base / element). This will provide all the foot options – I think – for both BIG DBA and DBMM (400AP) army list options and for Armati army list too.
Hope you like the end result, some images below / attached. CarlL
