For those based in USA there is "A History of Myanmar since Ancient Times, Traditions and Transformations" by Michael Aung-Thwin and Maitrii Aung-Thwin published in 2012, and available in pbk (or pdf) for $29 (new pbk) it also features on ebay USA from about $15 plus shipping (I assume used copy?) among other books on ancient to medieval Burma / Myanmar CarlL

For those of you who play DBN or colonial variants of DBA then you may be interested in the following Osprey title: The North-East Frontier 1837–1901, by Ian Heath (Author), Michael Perry (Illustrator) pub 1999; isbn 9781855327627 retails for £11.69p on Osprey website but 2nd hand copies often (but not always) cheaper from various sellers.
Osprey give following blurb: "Description Despite the fact that it was events on the North-West Frontier which perennially awed and captivated Victorian audiences, British India's North-East Frontier saw at least as much military activity. Even the heroid 11-day defence of the isolated outpost of Kohima against overwhelming odds – fewer than 200 British-officered troops against perhaps 6,000 Nagas – failed to capture the public imagination. Today, after the passage of another century, Britain's numerous campaigns and conquests in Assam and the surrounding hills have faded even further into the mists of obscurity. This fascinating text by Ian Heath examines the peoples and places of the North-East Frontier.
Table of Contents The North-East Frontier 1837-1901 · Chronology · British Forces on the North-East Frontier · Hill-Tribes · Manipur · Warfare on the North-East Frontier · Further Reading · The Plates"

There's also the more recently published "Warfare in Indochina: A Military History of Ancient & Medieval Mainland Southeast Asia" by Peter D Womack. I haven't seen it so don't know whether or not it may be useful. Moreover, it only seems to be available from Amazon.

Sheffmark,
In the Heath book it alludes to traditional arms and use of rectangular and circular shields on parade using red and gilt decoration, see notes to figures 5a and 5b. While earlier it notes the tradition of tattooing the soldiers body with mix of divine entities, animals (real and fantasy) and 'Burmese' letters; as well as each soldier was tattooed with the symbol of their regiment (early 19th century but unclear if this is a long standing tradition) which was often an animal or monster (of fantasy). So I wonder if the earlier periods may have also used such features on shields or on pennons? A bit like the use of monsters (if in caricature of cultural significance) like those of the Chinese Tigermen (who had a long history in Manchu armies of China). Heath also describes common colours in use in Burmese uniforms by early 1820s onwards, which may help with what colouring existed earlier? CarlL

Whilst not strictly Burmese my recent reading on Khmer armies uncovered this useful website. Whilst I won’t be replicating these patterns in 15mm the section on dye colours is very useful. www.ikttearth.org/natural-dyeK

Great find Ken, is it ok if I copy your post and link to the Society of Ancients website forum where I started atab about traditional cloth and coloured patterns?
I also have a neglected 15mm Khmer army to paint up so this might be the spur to get me to open up that box (from 1990s?) and get that Irregular Miniatures army done!
Really useful post, Ken. CarlL

Thanks for all the help. I've now finished the army, (for better or worse!) and have posted a picture on the DBA Facebook page. Should be an interesting army to play with!
