Hello. I'm looking for army lists for Sub-Saharan African empires, like Mali, Aksum, Ghana, etc. I've searched the internet and Reddit, and I was directed here. Does anyone have any resources, or suggestions as to which existing non-African army list would be a good fit? Thanks, hopefully, in advance.

...West Sudanese, Kanem Bornu, Hausa States and their Wegner. But which era are you thinking of?

Welcome to Fanaticus Typ. Well, DBA army III/69 Western Sudanese (1000-1591 AD) covers the following:- Ghana, Mali, Songhai, Bornu, Kanem, Bulala and Hanusa. II/62 Abyssinians (100 AD-1529 AD) covers the Ethiopian Axumite Empire. III/70 Tuareg Army (1000-1880 AD) covers the Sahara desert. Does this help?

Typ As noted above by contributors. I used the West Sudanese III/69 list for my DBA (and DBMM) 28mm army - photos elsewhere on this forum.
You can cover more or less what "we know" about the many sub-Saharan kingdoms in West Africa from this list, so I have a predominantly bow armed (Bw elements) for my very early forces, later armies could be more spears and swordsmen (Sp & Bd) and the Hausa states late on have close order quilt barded cavalry [DBA = 4Kn, DBMM = 4Kn(X)] and probably some Ps servants and LH lesser nobles... all from my poor memory so forgive any errors. You might also consider searching for pdf's of DBMM army lists. These often have a bit more background.

The Society of Ancient's journal "Slingshot" had a very useful and memorable series of articles on the Songhay army of the Western Sudan, again from memory as I dont have my collection of Journals to hand. If you are a SoA member Typ you could find these via the index of past Slingshots that has been produced. CarlL

Way back in the day there was a regular contributor to the original Fanaticus called Rudy Nelson who ran a business called Time Portal <something> and would write articles on the web called 'Time Portal Passages' which were often linked to from the Fanaticus Resources Page.
He created some separated lists for the West Sudanese Empires and may have included some of the forest dwelling states as well. I might or might not still have a hard copy of this buried in my folders full of useful articles.
Cheers
