...finally I have the Takeda Clan ready to play: ...according to Triumph rules it is based differently, but it doesn't matter: ...the Takeda messengers don't use horo but the centipede as a sign....

Very pretty. Much better than mine, I fear. Somehow I find it very hard to get Japanese armour look right. These do that very effectively and with a minimalist approach. Great.

...painting is another problem. Finding the right rules is even harder. I am certain; Phil Barker never attempted battle with late samurai armies. You need house rules or; Irregular Wars, but there you have to adjust the bases...

Peter Pigs "Battles in the Age of War" or the old DBR rules/list no good?

mark leslie@: all PP-rules are square bashing like, and use another basing sistem. DBR could work as well. But i prefer my homerules in german... ...Uesugi Kenshin was considered the reincarnation of the war god Bishamon... ...the sign in the white field is supposed to represent Bishamon and means that the unit is personally led by Uesugi Kenshin... ...samurai armies used proven battle formations of the Chinese Tang dynasty: the Mori clan performs the nanasonae formation...

Vodnik, How familiar are you with the depth of Japanese infantry formations? I recall Ashigaru approx 5 deep, which reminded me of various Chinese infantry formations where '5' was a standard number.

...Warfare in Japan is more like a ritual. It's about the previous order and the daily Rortion Reis. With the victory of Tokugawa, there was no progress in Japan for centuries...

...no problem snowcat; samurai formations are the same problem like roman cohortes. One deep is ok. The other problem are the japanese battle formations. The pp-rules try to show that positions andmovement. Bit the rules are skirmishlike. DBMM on a big table could work. But the idea of DBMM is not to show such samurai warchoreographies: Other men visit Mekka. I dit prefer to visit japanese castleo and Sekigahara: www.tabletopinzuerich.ch/nipon/nipon.html it is in german but with many pictures...

Having flicked through the Killer Katanas II (I think) rule book at one time I did get the impression that battle formations could be quite exotic and may be difficult to reflect in any sort of rules.

... I have read through KK, too extensive for me but sluggish. None of my friends know the rules... ...Oda Nobunaga was the first Japanese empire unifier... ...he also defeated the Iko-Iki rebels after 10 years. But then he was killed by one of his generals...

I notice in your signature line that you play 2.2, presumably not 3.0. Why is that? Is there something you didn't like with 3.0, or were you happy enough with 2.2 that you didn't see the point in changing to 3.0?
