Apologise if it's been asked before. Does a group all have to move all the same distance? So if one part of it meets an opposition do they all stop or can other parts of the group continue it's move up to the maximum allowed if it would make contact with another element?

This is covered by the third paragraph of the section headed TACTICAL MOVES (on page 8 in the hardback edition).
"Each of its [the group's] elements must move parallel to or follow the first to move, must move the same distance, or wheel forward through the same angles..."
If one element stops, they all stop.

Menacussecundus is of course correct… …but I would like to empathize something that is often overlooked.
Groups are more than just a loose collection of individual elements. A group is actually a sort of over-sized ‘super element’, and only turning-to-face, or a combat outcome, or their owner can split a group. (Otherwise figures 13c and 13d would be very different)
Threat Zones on page 9 says:- “An element or group which is at least partially in or touches a TZ has it’s movement limited…”
Thus a group influenced by a single enemy TZ has two choices:- 1) Split the group and have just the affected elements limited, or 2) Stay together and have the entire group affected by the TZ. (owners choice)
And if a group is under the influence of two or more threat zones, 1) Split the group and have just the affected elements limited, or 2) Stay together and have the entire group react to one TZ, just as a single element in multiple TZ’s chooses which to respond to. (again, owners choice)
As I said, nowhere in the rules does it say that a group is FORCED to split, except when turning-to-face, or the involuntary result of a combat outcome, or if their owner chooses to split the group.

That's disappointing, I'll have to explain this to my warband when half of them are forced to stop with the oppo within touching distance.

Sounds like you're looking for a 'spontaneous advance for warband' house rule...

Sounds like you're looking for a 'spontaneous advance for warband' house rule... There's a message here somewhere right? It did seem silly that everyone had to stop, so we let it happen anyway as we couldn't thimk of any logical reason why it wouldn't.

Must admit I liked the 2.2 rule that allowed you to make a second move (for an additional PIP) with Warband if you contacted enemy.
