Don’t worry about my whinging that something dubious such as ‘Littoral Landings’ is included in DBA 3.0 while blatantly obvious things like ambushes are not. I am still the self appointed chairman of the Committee Representing Auxiliary Personnel (which unfortunately spells C.R.A.P.), who's aim is to champion the cause for improving the downtrodden, castrated, and artificially weakened plight of my members, either by:- * having a time limit, and invaders must win before nightfall or the defenders will be the victors… * somehow improving their combat factor, or at least make them survive combat for longer... * allow them to use their speed to break-off combat, like they did in earlier versions of DBA… * let them ‘evade’ by recoiling like mounted, a base depth OR a full base width, their choice… * and of course, let them form ambushes, as all the historical accounts say they often did. (Personaly speaking, if it was up to me then I would give them ALL these abilities… …then weak armies of Ax/Ps would be actively sort after instead of being avoided…)

In this respect DBA reveals its biggest inner problem. Concerning light and heavy units of foot it is simply an unbalanced game...

it is the unfortunate aspect of rules that the writers create them in their own image, that is to say 'so they work for their own vision of what rules work for them'
I have no idea why you can't break off or indeed even evade a charge. I used to love playing the Huns in WRG 7th as you couldn't get near them.

Ah those were the days, they were cheap as chips as well point wise. It was a reaction to the group I played with as army choices became an arms race of EHC/SHC and EHI, I just got bored of it and went the other way, I don't ever remember losing a game (though that could be my memory going as it was nigh on 40 years ago) and still have a soft spot for the Huns. The army is still sitting there waiting for their day to come again.

Currently the Huns (and other LH) are just free hits for enemy Bow.
(It's not so much the lack of PIPs breaking LH in DBA, it's other things.)
(*needs its own thread though*)

The army is still sitting there waiting for their day to come again. I found the mass firepower armies were kings as you caused so many casualties per figure you could stop virtually every charge dead in its tracks. I must admit I used EHI in the front ranks of my Swiss pikemen that I used in varying size units in three ranks to get maximum figure count per frontage...in a 15 figure unit you could start with 13 of the 15 figures being able to fight. It was a fantastic army and ploughed through every army it met as it was so easy to get the units impetuous and none of the group players learned to trigger them early or place a reserve to catch them disordered.

Back to littoral landings (adding in passing that I am also a member of the LH appreciation society): must the landers be placed more than a base width away from enemy? if not, can they be placed in contact with enemy? if so, what happens in terms of conforming and combat?
Asking these questions because we all need to bring a littoral army to the Britcon tournament this year - previously I have ignored the blighters as much as possible.

Simple answers: No, yes, as per 'moving into contact with the enemy' section P.

Bear in mind that both players are able to make littoral landings. What is sauce for the defending goose is sauce for the attacking gander in his or her bound.

Thanks, Paul. Re Stevie's earlier comment, "I have come to justifying it as a form of ambush", does this mean that the Littoral is in fact metaphorical?

Or choose not to make littoral landings - heresy I know but it can be done.
