I'm sure this has been debated in the past but I can't seem to find a thread in it....I was wondering what was the theory/decision behind allowing an overlap for elements in mutual front corner contact with a War Wagon element? as the rule states on page 10 in paragraph 3 of Close Combat..."An element not in front close combat but in mutual right-to-right or left-to-left front corner contact with any enemy element except Psiloi or Scythed Chariot overlaps this;"? So to put it simply you can't overlap Ps or Sch...which I can understand is possibly due to the fluid formation of Ps does not offer a visible position as to where the flank starts or ends and with Sch it's a bit dangerous because of the whirling spikey bits on the sides of the chariots...but what about War Wagons which count as facing all round until the contacted on one of them which becomes the frontal contact edge. The three other edges of the element still have a TZ so do in a way still offer defence and are not necessarily an exposed flank as with other elements? Is it because the flanks of Ps & Sch are considered fluid and moving while the flanks of a war Wagon are stationary and cannot initiate combat?
I'm not rule-rumbling, just wondering what was behind this rule decision?

The long and short...
This is a balancing decision for the game. You can justify it however you wish. Phil likes to do such justification. He is not wrong for liking this. It adds color and depth to the narrative. However... in the end, it is for balancing the element types.

If it helps, you can think about it as a decrease in "flank" firepower if the "front" is engaged as most troops are preoccupied with the main threat. Or just the anxiety of more enemy in a threatening position whilst you're under attack in a slow moving vehicle.
