The rules state that the 3 elements of an allied contingent include: 1. the general's element from its army 2. at least 1 element from the entry with the largest number of elements. If the army has 2 troop types with that number allowed, the player chooses which to use. 3. any third element is the player's choice from elements yet unused.
Looking at IV/43c Later Hungarian as an allied contingent:
1. The first element chosen must be a 3Kn (normally the Hungarian General's element) 2. Then at least one element must be chosen from the 'ENTRY' with the largest number of elements. Because there are multiple ENTRIES with 2 elements of a corresponding type, but NO ENTRIES with more than 2, the player may choose at least one element from: 2 x 6Kn or 3Kn, 2 x LH, 2 x Sp or 5Hd, 2 x Ps or WWg or 4Pk or 3/4Bw. 3. The third element is the player's choice from list IV/43c excluding the General's element (as it has already been selected).
Note that this is interpreting the rules literally, specifically the word 'entry'. Definition of 'entry' as it applies in this context: - the act of entering or recording something in a book, register, list, etc. - the statement, item, etc., so entered or recorded.
The Later Hungarian IV/43c list does have the capacity to select 3 elements of the LH 'troop type', *but* these are split between 2 SEPARATE ENTRIES: "2 x horse archers (LH), 1 x horse archers or Serbian hussars (LH)", so do not count as the entry with the largest number of elements.
The Later Hungarian IV/43c list is an example of a potential allied contingent with a very broad array of options.
Is this how others interpret the rules?
Cheers

I interpret it the same way as you do Snowcat.
If for example an army list said:- 1 x General (3Kn), 2 x imitation legionaries (4Bd), 2 x warriors with long spears (4Bd), 2 x freed slaves in captured armour (4Bd), 3 x skirmishers (Ps), 2 x cavalry (Cv), …then I’d say their allied contingent would be the 3Kn, 1 x Ps, and one of your choice. (Yes, there are more 4Bd, but they are three separate entries. The Ps is the largest entry)

I interpret it the same way too.
Some lists have an and/or selection for allies too which allows you to take up two elements from up to two allies. These I interpret to be the General element and a choice of element from the most numerous in that army and that too allows choice if there are several options within that list with the same number of elements....it adds the headache of extra pips for each command, but some may want to take it.

So for example, the Wallachian & Moldavians IV/65 can have IV/43c Later Hungarian AND IV/47 Golden Horde & Successors allied contingents. This means BOTH allied contingents of 2 elements each must be taken, and that each contingent requires its own PIPs to move it, and cannot be combined with other allied contingents or the main army for group moves. So some potentially nice extra troop types for the army overall *BUT* a serious PIP drain! (The singular IV/66 Later Polish allied contingent is probably a better alternative.)
The same rules for selection by most numerous type by 'entry' in each army list apply.
