I'm currently painting this army to take its place amongst a few Sixteen Kingdoms armies I have collected and thought I'd post about something of an oddity in the army list.Army II/61b covers the Mu-jung Hsein-pi armies from 300-431AD and contains a specific option of...
Option 1...4x2LH Option 2 4x6Cv(Chained Cavalry). Option 3 4xHd(deployed as 4Kn until the armies 2nd bound).
This means that unless you take option 2 or 3 which were specific to individual battles, that for the entire period of the army you have to take 4x2LH.Ok option 3 is a quirk to represent a ruse by army General to fool his opponent, but there is no reason that the army would change from light horse archers to armoured cavalry then back to light horse archers given the evolution of Chinese and Steppe Cavalry of that time period
From the onset of the earlier Three Kingdoms Cavalry was becoming progressively heavier with the introduction of horse armour and the stirup. The Eastern armies during this time period were developing Cataphract Cavalry but took some time to work out how to use them as effective shock troops.
The "Chained Cavalry" was a response of using Cavalry in close formation to prevent infantry slipping through the horse ranks to evade them...by chaining the horses together it held them in place or snapped their necks to provide a barrier where the infantry could be contained and shot down before they could evade...cruel but effective.
However, this proves that some of the Light horse where now wearing armour and should really be considered as 3Cav (when not chained). It just seems silly to me that the list shows that up to 1/3 of the army could adapt to be heavier Cavalry for one battle only given the evidence that most Asian armies of this period were fielding larger amounts of armoured cavalry.

Another important factor is the troop’s behaviour in battle… …which is often related to hidden things such as morale, plus the surprise effects inflicted upon the enemy troops.

I agree with you Stevie but in DBA a Bd is a Bd be it elite or conscript.Heavily armoured Cavalry isn't light Cavalry...if it was medium Cavalry maybe, but not when they are equivalent to cataphracts.🙂

One of my favourite quotes being What did you do in the war grandad? I survived it lad, I survived it! Though I praise those who go into harm's way I know the importance of peeling potatoes and cleaning heads for those returning from harms way and am sure a Storey has bravely stayed at base defending it over the centuries. Admittedly the Storeys who served on the Somme, western desert, Italy and Palestine may have had different recollections
