Three of us met for some DBA yesterday- played a couple of games to run out my mates’ newly painted medieval armies, and also ‘Greek’ themed games (pre-Mercian DBA late Feb.) with One Hour Wargames scenario 4 and *Lucky General added to mix it up.
(*Lucky General- before the game you dice, highest scorer gets a ‘lucky general’ token. Any time after that he can reroll one dice (Combat or PIPs), but must accept the second roll and hand the token to his opponent…great fun, an idea stolen from the wargaming-mechanics blog wargaming-mechanics.blogspot.com/).
OHW scenario 4, ‘Take the High Ground’. Navarrese defended vs Feudal French aggressor. The Spanish were a weaker army in the open terrain, but fought manfully before being ejected from the hill (5-2 win to the French).
Nikephorian Byzantines vs Lysimachids - the phalanx and hill-hugging Byz 8Bw glared at each other, while Byzantine cavalry ran in a sweeping hook around to the right. The Lysimachid camp was captured, but cavalry were repulsed by the rear of the phalanx, and the Emperor killed: Byz lost by 2-5….but a fun game.
Sicilian Hoplite Greeks invaded v Ariarathid Kappadokians. After preliminary skirmishing the Greek flank march was nobbled by opposing heavy cavalry - a resounding Kappadokian win, 0-4.
Later Achaemenids fought Syracusans. Persian scythed chariots and heavy cavalry did more damage than usual, while the Syracusan artillery proved ineffective. Persian win, 3g to 0 (+Sch).
Feudal English invaded vs Feudal French. English longbowmen held off on the right, while the nobles charged left and centre after the foot-levy were committed and rapidly slaughtered. The usual messy swirling knight-fight ensued, but the English had the best of it…winning 4-0 (+2x7Hd).
‘Lucky General’ game - Rhodian Hoplite Greeks were invaded by the Successor Alketas. Macedonian psiloi rushed to capture a village on the Rhodian left, but their attack then stalled. Meanwhile the phalanxes edged forward and Greek spearmen landing from ships on the Successor left pressed hard. Closely fought, the Rhodians stole the win (4-3).
