This past weekend I got together with my dad and my brother for some gaming, including some DBA. Between us, we can currently field about twenty armies, and I thought it would be fun to get them all involved in some sort of structured competition. I decided that we would split them into four groups of five, with those groups playing against each other round-robin and the top two advancing to an eventual bracket of eight. Well, this was all far too much for the three of us to do in one weekend, but we did play through the first group of round-robin games. This division, dubbed the "Featherweights," saw I/6c Early Aramaean, I/7b Libyan, III/22c Maya, IV/19a Toltec-Chichimec and IV/63 Aztec all pitted against each other. After all ten games were played, the standings were: - IV/63 Aztec (4-0)
- I/7b Libyan (2-2)
- IV/19a Toltec-Chichimec (2-2)
- I/6c Early Aramaean (1-3)
- III/c Maya (1-3)

Interesting basing in the last game. Looks like 40 x 30mm bases for all, and 6 figures for Fast foot, 8 figures for Solid foot, in 2 ranks.

Our collection here is all 20mm plastics on 60mm frontage bases - the older units are on 60x40 (foot and mounted alike), whereas the newer ones have infantry on "regulation" 60x30 or 60x20 as appropriate.

Ah, so it was the 60x40mm ones I was looking at. Cheers.

Well, it has taken much longer than the first two, but we have finally worked through the third of the four qualifying rounds. The "Hell on Wheels" division featured all Bronze Age armies, most fielding a substantial chariot force. After ten games, the standings were as follows: - I/24b Later Hittite Imperial (3-1)
- I/4d Gasgan (3-1)
- I/19 Mitanni (2-2)
- I/25a Middle Assyrian (2-2)
- I/22a New Kingdom Egyptian (0-4)
The Gasgans were the real dark horse of this round, despite having the fewest horses, dark or otherwise. Due to the order in which we played the games, the Hittites got their qualification locked up pretty early, but the last two games featured the Gasgans, who were 1-1 at that point having lost to the Hittites and beaten the Mitanni. The Gasgans seemed like they should be underdogs, with an army half composed of psiloi, but as the invaders against the Egyptians, their fast warbands managed to break through the bows and blades in the Egyptian center before the Egyptian chariots and their landing force could ride down enough psiloi on the flanks. This put them up against the Assyrians, who were also 2-1, so the winner would qualify for the final bracket. This time the Gasgans were on the defense, and with the help of a difficult hill, their psiloi on the flanks overcame the Assyrian auxilia before the Assyrian chariots could overrun the warbands in the center.
I never seem to remember to taken enough pictures, but here are a few, at least:
The Assyrians were able to give the Hittites their sole defeat this round.
Egyptians defending against Assyrians. The Egyptians had some close games but never quite pulled out a win.
Mitanni prepare to crush the Assyrians 4-0.

Really pretty armies. Those are plastic figures if I am correct. You've done a great job.

I don’t really know much about any of these armies, but great work on the paint job.
