Hi everyone, I am brand new to historical wargaming and I'm wanting to get into DBA because A) It can be played on a small table (I will only have room for like a card table), B) It has smaller elements than most other games, and C) It seems relatively fast playing. I will mostly be doing things solo and I've decided that I want to do Arthurian Sub-Roman British, in part because I'm interested in that period and in part so I can also play Dux Bellorum with the same figures. Needless to say I've been devouring resources available. According to DBA 3.0 I want II/81, specifically II/81a "Armies of the Dux Brit, the Com Lit Sax, Britannia Prima, Ambrosius, Riothamus or Arthur AD 407-470 AD". I'm fine with that. Trying to find the "best" historical opponent though, I'm leaning towards the Saxons as they seem to fit better with my idea of Arthur (inspired, not at least in part, by the 2004 film). However, the DBA early saxon army seems odd since it's all warbands. Most other things I've looked at, including the DBM army list for the same army, allows for way more variety such as some cavalry, spears, etc. not just warbands. It almost feels like the Middle Anglo-Saxon list provides better options, if less historical, and I'm thinking of doing that instead as the opponent for my Arthurian. For this period, does that work or were the Saxons then really just the warband types and the more advanced variety is fanciful? Thanks in advance for helping a newb! - Wayne

Cavalry, blade, spearmen, auxilia, and Saxon warband; adding allies (II/73), the number of warband can be increased. After a while, you may find yourself collecting all the enemies listed.

Yes, early saxons are seriously warband heavy. Another enemy of ‘Arthur’ worth considering are the Picts II/68a and b. They can be more of a challenge. Cheers Martin

Good luck with the project, may the warband go on to great glory. Keep us all updated with your progress and welcome to the great book of Barker, "all hail the blessed purple"

Welcome to DBA.
The army lists are not gospel, you do what you want. Many people have created specific scenarios to recreate specific engagements, changing the number of elements for instance. If you prefer to base your army on Dux Bellorum's, or your own interpretation, nobody is going to stop you. (unless you try to bring it to a tournament that is, but then there is always HOTT)
where are you based? Ciao Arnopov

I am in the western middle of Florida (northern Tampa) so not much historicals near me unless I travel several hours. This area is 100% Warhammer and that's basically it. I mainly plan to do it solo for a while to indulge myself (Napoleonic as well using DBN) but may try to convince some of the locals to give it a try as well!

I'm not sure if you are aware that there's a srong DBA presence in the Gainesville/Jacksonville region. As I don't live in the US I don't know the distances between you and them. Cheers,

Cheers, It's a few hours away. I'm a fan of Tony Aguilar's so I do know his crew play. FWIW I'm also interested in Caesar in Gaul so I may explore that for additional variety instead of Arthur
