Page 17 of the HoTT 2.1 soft-backed edition says the only ground troops that can initiate and start a close combat against Aerial troops are Hero’s and Paladin’s.
And page 23 says disregard any unfavourable outcomes when opposing Sneakers unless you are a General, a Stronghold, or other Sneakers.
Now Gods and Dragons cannot be Generals, so the only Aerial Generals allowed are Airboats and Flyers. But should Airboat and Flyer Generals be practically immune to all Sneaker attacks?
Personally, I think Sneakers should be able to engage Generals, even Aerial ones. They are not attacking the unit, but are trying to assassinate the enemy Leader. And if that Leader recoils, then the rest of his unit will also fall back to protect him.
Otherwise, an attacking army (without a Stronghold) with an Aerial General (which cannot be engaged) makes the defender’s Sneaker completely impotent.
Aren’t Sneakers useless enough as it is already?

Sneaker seems the perfect description for an assassin, but then I don't play HotT (and the Guild might disagree).

Could pin the general from side with an allowed contact, and then hit from the front with the sneaker??

Hmmm…if a Paladin or Hero engages the enemy Aerial General from the front, how can you get them out of the way to make room for the Sneaker? You can only break-off if you move faster than the enemy. (I suppose the Sneaker could then flank the engaged General… …if there is room, and they start beyond the flank edge line… ...and they don't enter any impeding Threat Zones...)
So Sneakers are only any good if you also have Paladin or Hero, just in case your opponent 'may' have an Aerial General? That’s an awful lot of Army Points Martin! Perhaps my Daleks should scrap their red Supreme Blade General and have one of the Dalek Airboat squads as their Leader…. ...then Doctor Who and his Companions can never get at him!

Sorry, got me words all mixed up….have edited. Pin from side by eg attacking with a hero to bring the aerial to ‘ground level’, then same bound pop a sneaker onto the front face, so the combat that follows is between target and sneaker.
Theoretically, of course….too many variables to guarantee this happening in the right order.

I too have made a mistake Martin. I previous said:- “Gods and Dragons cannot be Generals, so the only Aerial Generals allowed are Airboats and Flyers.” I forgot to mention Aerial Heroes… …which makes it even more important that Sneakers should be able to engage Generals, even if they are Aerial ones. It’s already bad enough that having Water Lurkers is a waste of time if the defender doesn’t place any water features. Now it appears that having Sneakers is pretty much a waste of time if the attacking-invader has an Aerial General. I would like to see ALL the elements being used… …otherwise why do the rules bother with them?

Only slightly off topic, I also allow shooters and magicians to attack aerials. After all, it's ranged combat ;-)

I’m glad that you would allow Shooters & Magicians to target Aerials Afterburner… …because that is exactly what the rules say as well. HoTT 2.1, softback edition, page 20, second bullet point:- “...except that Aerials can be shot at over ground troops.”

It would be remiss of me to say "of course, if you can throw a pair that high"
Come on Cromwell has not hit us with the cheese for a while.
