So command distance is 20BW for LH, 8BW normally or 4BW if restricted. I’m currently reading “A sensory history of Ancient Warfare” and it discusses Alexander at Issus being on hills with greater visibility of the battle when when he was charging with his cav or Darius in the middle of his army…
It occurred to me that if I was 1000 ft off the ground I would have a great view of the battle and could coordinate much better (assuming messengers etc) since I would see all the units moving, relative positions etc.
So how about this: 8BW normally, 4BW if obstructed and 10-12BW if the general is on a hill representing the better view. But this could also encourage generals to hang back on a rear hill so as to command their army more effectively (also thinking of Samurai in their command tents). Slightly more complicated but would be a nice touch.
I would also argue that’s general in combat should only have a command distance of 4BW since he’s pretty busy to be paying attention to the rest of the battle. So +1CF in combat, risk death, but also harder to control the army when they finally hit.
What do people think? Too much? Too little?

I am not sure about increasing the command distance when on a hill, but limiting it when the general is engaged in combat, does have merit.

I like both ideas Greedo (especially the reduced Command Range when the General has his front-edge contacting an enemy…very realistic).
As for hilltop Command Range…sure, why not. However, its effect will be rather limited:- * Being ‘in’ a Difficult Hill reduces visibility, so it only works on Gentle Hills. * The General’s element must be straddling the ridge-line or peak-point, as being on the wrong side of the ridge-line or peak-point blocks visibility.
Still, both are excellent suggestions. 👍
