Welcome to Fanaticus
Johnd68.
Personally, I’d don’t have a problem with Aerials recoiling,
even if it is an artificial rule to improve play-balance.
“Contacting The Enemy” on page 17 of the HoTT 2.1 soft back edition says:-
“Aerials can engage ground troops in close combat, but cannot
be engaged by ground troops
(other than a Hero or Paladin) unless already engaged in close combat to their front.”
In other words, ALL combat, even air-to-air combat, is conducted at ground level.
As for recoiling from shooting but not having room, “Recoiling” on page 24 of the
HoTT 2.1 soft back edition says:-
“If
(the recoiling troops) meet friends, it passes through to their rear if of a type
allowed to do so, otherwise pushes them back if facing in the same direction.”
Which leads us to “Passing Through Troops” on page 16:-
“* Aerials can pass over any ground troops except when recoiling.
When an element’s outcome move is insufficient to clear the base of an element
it is passing through, under or over, it is placed in the first large enough unoccupied
space beyond.”
So what does all this mean?
Well, if recoiling Aerials cannot pass over friends, they’ll push them back (if they are
facing in the same direction). And Aerials recoiling into an enemy,
no matter the cause
of the recoil (combat, making a supporting flank attack and those dicing are defeated,
or if shot at) will be destroyed.
(I just think of it as them as being disordered, scattered and routed in all the confusion). ----------------------------------
By the way, I’ve only been playing HoTT for few years, and initially I had great difficulty in
differentiating between the DBA rules and the HoTT rules, and kept getting these mixed up.
So I made a set of ‘Crib-Sheets’ to aid me, which can be found here:-
