After going on a country walk, it struck me that not all woods are dense and nearly impenetrable. Some woodland is fairly open and much less of a hindrance. So, along with Rough Going Hills (see fanaticus.boards.net/thread/3007/rough-hills ), why not also have Rough Going Woods as well? Open Woods = Rough Going, otherwise they are the same as Bad Going Woods. Dense Woods = Bad Going, these are the current standard type of Wood in DBA. Let defenders choose which type of wood they want present, but Forest and Tropical Regions can only have Dense Woods. It’ll at least add a little more variety to our terrain choices.

Maybe ‘rough going woods’ might be covered by the ‘scrub’ terrain type?

I regularly walk the dog through woodland I find easy to traverse. If I were with 50 or so chums and trying to keep a tight formation it may prove trickier.

Maybe ‘rough going woods’ might be covered by the ‘scrub’ terrain type? Ah, but Scrub doesn’t affect visibility Martin…woods do. In other words, a Rough Going 'Open' Wood is the same as a Bad Going 'Dense' Wood, except that being rough they don’t have the -2 combat penalty and they do allow pursuit. In this respect they are the same as a Hamlet BUA…but you can have 3 of them. (Currently a Hamlet is the only rough going terrain feature that restricts visibility)Players might find a use for more rough going terrain that affects visibility...

An interesting option Stevie and useful for Lithuanians.
DBMM offers a wooded hill which can be gentle or difficult. Mine have at least 1/2BW free of wood to allow troops an uphill advantage in close combat.

Actually Timurilank, it won’t be much use to the IV/18 Lithuanians IF Forest and Tropical Regions are only allowed to have ‘Dense Woods’.
Still, other defending armies might benefit:- * a mounted army wouldn’t be hopelessly outclassed when fighting in ‘Open Woods’… * Hoplites wouldn’t mind ‘Open Woods’ when fighting an Auxiliary army of Thracians or Illyrians… * Pikes (especially 'fast' 3Pk) wouldn’t mind ‘Open Woods’ when fighting a Bow army… * the Romans wouldn’t mind ‘Open Woods’ when fighting Warbands with no rear-support… …and no doubt other players can think of times when an ‘Open’ instead of a ‘Dense’ wood is useful.

I seem to remember WRG premoting that woodland was thicker at its edges and that some woodland could be "plashed" by some armies as a means of defence.... could this make a fortified wood option? 😁

Perhaps the type of Woods could be determined when an element first tries to enter/move in it. Roll a D6 and take your chance. EVEN its Open Woods, ODD its Dense Woods.

I suppose such a Fortified Wood would have the same characteristics as a BUA Fort, but be modelled as a collection of trees with thick plashed vegetation around its curved perimeter instead of stone walls or wooden palisades. I often use a ‘Sacred Grove’ as an Edifice BUA, which consists of little more than a bunch of trees, a dolman cave entrance (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolmen#Types ) or a small temple, with a holy pond and a small stone sacrificial alter. (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_grove ) (My Auxiliary and Warband armies like an extra bit of bad going that can touch a table edge) ------------------------------------- Perhaps the type of Woods could be determined when an element first tries to enter/move in it. Roll a D6 and take your chance. EVEN its Open Woods, ODD its Dense Woods. You could Barritus, you could… …it’ll be like not knowing exactly what the depth of a river is until you try to cross it. From a distance the wood looks dense…but there may be less undergrowth if it’s early or late in the year or there has been a long dry spell, or maybe most of the hindering loose brushwood has been cleared over the centuries by nearby peasants and used as firewood.

[img class="smile" Hay that was not my idea. Lol But the thought of a wood being a Fort in dba did make me laugh. 😂
