Ok, another controversial idea, loosely thought up at 11:20pm after our kid has finally gone to sleep....
When house rules (or any rules for that matter) get discussed, one thing that I've noticed comes up is the Ancient people line on one side talking about Hoplites, Chariots, Cataphracts, Psiloi, and Legionaries, and the Medieval guys line up on the other side talking about Heavy Knights, Longbows, War Wagons, Men at arms, Crossbows etc. Then there's the third group that comes in with the various ancient Chinese and East Asian factions, whom I will not insult with my interpretation of their needs..
The rules concerning these realms are *similar* but not the same.
Since DBA tends to work it's best when historical armies fight against each other, could you have sub rules for DBA in each era (perhaps each of the 4 books) that help DBA to fit within that era better than it otherwise would in the other eras.
For example, Legionaries are a very particular type of Blade, and Hoplites are a very particular type of Spear.
Could you have a Book 2 sub-rules concerning how Bd, and Sp function? Both could rear support each other, and perhaps have a higher CF vs Shooting?
Later Book 3 spear, or even Book 4 spear might not get rear support, but might have other attributes that would make their spears more like medieval spears?
The other option is of course to create a bunch of new troop types, but I've seen that in 2.2+ and it confused the living h*@&ll out of me.
This might prove totally infeasible, but I've seen generic game systems before that have period specific extensions and they work decently.
Also, I know Stevie and others are working on an historical notes book that tries to something similar.
Anyway, food for thought.
Chris
