Let's say we are having a battle and the terrain is Forest.
Forest says 1-2 woods are compulsory. How do you determine 1 or 2 woods? Also, the optional terrain features, how do you determine how many you are going to have? I know you have to have 1 bad or rough going, but I am confused on the quantity of the features.
Thanks. Scott

Off the top of my head, you can choose either 1 or 2 Woods from the Compulsory & either 2 or 3 from any of the Optional features. You can never have more than 3 of any type & yes, you must include at least one Bad or Rough Going.

J is correct.
The choice one or two compulsory features is up to the discretion of the defender.
However, there are factors to consider such as the size of features and the size of the board.
Obviously, three large wood (4BW x 5BW) would leave little open ground to deploy troops if placed on a 60cm x 60cm board. But mixing the size of features (small/medium) would ensure their placement.

So then the defender determines how many terrain is place, right?

Defender chooses terrain so in case of forest they choose 1 or 2 woods They then chose rest of terrain 1 to 3 options They must have one area of rough or bad going, woods are bad going so that complies with that requirement
You cant have more than 3 woods in total so if you chose 2 compulsory you can only chose 1 more wood.
Then roll to see what goes where with compulsory first
Similarly with arable. You could choose 2 compulsory plough 1 more plough then a bit of rocky ground You could roll and place the three plough then find the rough ground cant be placed as not enough space. This is fine you have to choose and attempt to place the rough / bad but may not be able to. You could then roll a 1 on first pips and find all plough turn to rough and end up with three rough
One other thing to watch is rolling a 6 for placement, this means invader chooses quarter but it is still the defender who chooses. Of course the invader could chose a quarter they know it is impossible to place the terrain piece due to other things being there already.
Hope that makes sense
