Hi all,
Brand new to DBA, and looking for some advice.
I recently purchased this:https://www.forgedinbattle.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=126_62&product_id=532
I understand (from various people on Facebook) that this product isn't optimized for DBA, but frankly I liked the models, so I just went with it.
That said, I have a number of questions:
1) Any advice on playing Spartans in DBA? They seem fairly one-note with their extreme (and frankly, expected) reliance on hoplites.
2) I'm having issues finding reliable sources on the colors schemes of the non-Spartan units (Thracians, Rhodians, Cretans, Agrianians, Thessalians and even the Peltasts). One senior player in my area suggested I paint them in colors that would have been found during the time, so I might just go with a fairly disorganized mishmash of colors.
(That said, in a time before uniforms, how did these people know who to attack/not attack? Especially since there was a lot of infighting in Greece, and the various allies/mercenaries would have likely fought on both sides).
3) Other than the Spartan Hoplite army and Spartan army in Greece, what other lists do you recommend that I branch out to? Particularly given that what I purchased seems to have a few other options; and I'm open to buying more stuff to allow me more flexibility in fielding different Greek lists.
Thank you!

Joasht, Welcome to Fanaticus Forum. Good choice of army to start with and if you can make the investment I would suggest “Armies Of the Macedonian and Punic Wars” by Duncan Head. This will cover not only Sparta but all the non-Spartan units you listed. The Forged In Battle series may not be optimized for DBA, but that can be compensated if you plan to build an opponent from the same era. Many figures can be used for both sides. Cheers,

Welcome to fanaticus! As timurilank stated, this set is not particular for DBA. You certainly get enough Hoplites. The extra troops will help develop other armies (e.g. Thessalian, Aitolian, Thracian) as few will be needed for Sparta. If you wanted a Peloponnesian War look for the Spartans then Xyston does the set below: Spartan DBA set
Cheers Jim

Wow - that FiB pack gives you everything you need for the Spartans plus loads more spares. If you stop with Sparta you’ll have loads of figures left over so add two more packs of hoplites and you’ll be able to build any two DBA army lists from the II/5 Later Hoplite Greek list with most options available. That’ll mean you can fight loads of historical battles.
Not a bad start to DBA! However, you’ll probably have lots of spares - so maybe not the most cost effective way of buying Greeks....but then FiB doesn’t have the best packaging for DBA!
Advice on branching out.....logically you should do Persians next and then Alexander and the Successors after that. Then once you are there Rome, Carthage and the Punic wars will follow.....or is it just me who is addicted?

Thank you for the advice thus far!
Given all my spare models, are there other lists that would suit the collection? Something that perhaps makes better use of the vast number of bows/peltasts/slingers/cav my set seems to have come with in addition to the hoplites.
Pardon this mundane question, and I'm still waiting for my book to arrive in the mail :/
Thank you!

Hi joasht To expand on the core Spartans list, I’d suggest /strongly recommend the ‘Spartan overseas expeditions of Brasidas and Agesilaus’ lists (II/5k in the book). This adds some assorted extras, Inc some light troops and mounted, and has an amphibious ability, too, should it be in the position to use it. Martin

Hi there, welcome in. I love Greek forces. Your box of figs should allow you to make Spartans and other generic Greek types. Bet the FIB sets can get you to Lart size force easy as well. Good luck

Hi joasht, there are a hoast of armies that you can branch into with Greek hoplites. The Spartan expeditions as already mentioned as well as a small force even participating in wars between Rome and Carthage. Greek hoplites served in several other armies, Acheamenid Persian, Saitic & Kyrenean Greek, Phoenicians and Syracusan armies included. This allows you plenty of scope to add a range of variable troop types.
