Were ancient/medieval close order bow and crossbow units much the same depth as the heavy fighting foot units they supported? Or shallower?
For example, 8 ranks was the typical unit depth for a Roman legionary, as it was for the early Greek hoplites. Ancient Chinese armies used a 5-deep system, but up to 8-deep has been recorded. All of these figures usually refer to the heavy foot fighting men. But what about close order bowmen and crossbowmen, as opposed to skirmishing archers?
