I am thinking of doing something in late October. The Medway centre is open with various rules in place. Before I get into the nitty gritty of the operating mechanics, i'd be interested in getting a feel for how much interest there would be. I appreciate that perception of risk is vey much a personal choice. I guess the following are likely to apply: - Bring your own food and drink - no use of the kitchen.
- Sitting well back from the table or having a spare chair set back when not your bound.
- Only use your own miniatures and scenery and hands off opponent's - so most likely Open format to meet this.
- Lots of hand washing/sanitisers etc
- Regular wiping down of tables, door handles etc
- Limit on numbers (12?) to facilitate distancing - will depend on the size of room I can get. Particularly between games.
- Not sure on face masks - just when playing the game or optional?
- Non-refundable payment up front unless whole event is cancelled and the Medway don't charge me!
As far as the actual game rules in a COVID universe - how about no group moves (social distancing), -1 combat factor for close order troops a they will be in uncomfortable face masks and -1 in cities due to the extra risks in urban areas!! (Joking).
I am in the final stages of a house refurbishment before moving in and so won't be able to give this much thought over the next couple of weeks but do let me know if you might be interested.
Cheers
Simon

The conditions you list sound quite workable. Maybe the loser has to sanitise the table and chairs after each match? You may not need strict no touch rules, particularly if there is organised sport allowed in the area (I would imagine tennis, rugby, football, cricket players must have to use the same ball), but a nice compromise could be that you must wear disposable gloves when playing. Unfortunately, I'm not leaving Melbourne any time soon. Cheers Jim .

Hi Simon Not sure. Yes I desperately want to get back playing, but on the other hand, as my microbiologist wife points out, almost the worst case scenario for virus transmission is where you are indoors with a lot of people with minimal ventilation and sitting face to face with someone for an extended period of time, i.e. over 15 mins. On the other hand I think your suggestions are sensible to minimise the risk. I would suggest face masks should be compulsory if people are going to be closer than 2m and in terms of face mask usage there's a video on the following site which explains the do and don'ts www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-53954562Basically if people are not wearing them properly or getting hold of the mask to take them on or off or adjust them they become next to useless! I presume touching other stuff is not a problem so long as you don't then put your hands near your nose or mouth but wash or sanitise them thoroughly. The analogy to sports is a bit misleading as I understand that most sports people are being isolated before they play and regularly health checked so they can be reasonably certain no participant is carrying the virus. Sorry to be such a 'downer' but being of a certain age where catching this thing may not be just feeling rubbish for a few days but, even where the risk is minimal, it could lead to some sort of long term organ damage, I'm tending to be a bit careful.

Just to clarify, I was thinking of community sports rather than professional sports, (where indeed the players are in a bubble). We are in the middle of a lockdown in Melbourne but we are also planning our way out and my community cricket club is considering the plans that are coming down from government to get us back into some routine. Much will be done to minimise contact and interaction but the ball will still be the ball. Indeed, measures will need to be taken for some time to come to protect us as best as possible for all activities, wargaming included. Compulsory masks is probably a good idea given the average age of wargamers. Like many others, I wear a mask all day at my hospital and I'm now used to it and not expecting it to go away any time soon. But all we can do is follow the health advice with rigour and then leave it to people to make a very personal choice. We can minimise the risk but we won't be able to exclude it. It's the new reality, as they say. But on a brighter note, my painting is catching up and my Sumerians are on the table against NKE as we speak (type). Cheers Jim

Excellent ideas, Simon. Safety first! Oh, and use of this army, II/61a Wu-huan, is prohibited due to ongoing travel restrictions. (Grins.)

Hi all,
Just to confirm that there won't be a Bakewell competition in October. This is mainly due to the fact that getting my house sorted is taking taking longer than expected and there wasn't much expression of interest further to my original e-mail. I will try for something in the New Year, assuming the government's (IMHO) completely disproportionate, inconsistent and unbalanced response to COVID hasn't wrecked the country by then! Perhaps we could do something in Sweden - that bastion of common sense...
