I'm getting ready to start painting a French Ordonnance army, Book IV/82a, and noticed there is an option of 3 elements for the General: 3KN, Mtd-4Lb, and 4Lb. Has anyone used the mounted longbow or longbow element for the General, and how did it turn out in combat? Every battle report I've seen on video or in text has used the 3Kn element for the General, and I'm wondering if it will be worth using the other elements on occasion or not.
Thanks in advance.

I am working on the IV/82b option which lists an such an element which is useful. As the general’s element, you may want to have one to experiment with, however, you do have the arrier-ban 4 x 3Bw and 2 x artillery. If you need more firepower, look to an Italian Condotta ally with 2 x elmetti (3Kn) and 1 x artillery and watch the expression on your opponent’s face.

timurilank,
I have the Essex army set, so I have all of the elements. I was just wondering if anybody has used any of the optional General elements and how it turned out for them. Hopefully I'll have mine painted by the time my local gaming store opens back up for actual in-store gaming.

Of the 100+ armies only one is commanded by a bow armed general, the Nubian. His loss counts as two elements and is therefore less likely to be deployed in the main battle line at the start of the game. However, at the cost of 1 pip, he can move into range and support an existing archery exchange which can be useful. French Ordonnance /82a. In close combat, bow is +2 against foot and +1 for the general, still risky. Increase your factor by adding side support from solid blade (voulgiers) and a gentle hill, now your close combat prospects look better.

Can't give any actual experience, (apart from occasionally using a Bw general in a Nubian army) but I'd imagine you'd be pretty brave to go for the Bw General when you have a 3Kn option instead.
Ok the follow up for Kn's can lead to your general charging off only to be surrounded and cut up, but with a Bw general you (mostly) only get the +1 in combat and against foot, as Timurilank says, you're already on a pretty low factor so any 'heavy' foot enemy can be a problem.
Times when you may want to have a Bw general: When you're facing a mainly mounted force when the general's 4, +1 in close combat could come in useful, but then any loss is deadly. When the enemy shoot at you, as you get +1 for being shot at, so you do have an advantage in fire exchanges.
Overall, however, I'd have thought the 3Kn was the better option for most other enemy types/situations.

Def agree with this, many a time my brave Knight G has pursued himself to his own destruction.
