Reading one of the DBA Wikia suggestions regarding pikes in the game that I rather like and believe I will try out in battles between my Ordonnance Burgundians and my Swiss Confederates. Double base pikes. Give them a base CV of +5 vs foot and +6 vs Mtd. ( optional +1 for rear support). Combat factor modifier of -1 vs distant shooting. I would also add that like all double based units the first stand lost in combat should count as 2 stands lost.

I myself am against the idea of ‘8Pk’ elements, because of the reasons contained in here:- fanaticus.boards.net/post/17660/Having said that, I do think it would have been easier had columns been treated as if they were double-based for conforming and aligning purposes. (only without the extra combat bonuses...except when applicable to Pk, Wb, and LH). It has always stuck me that figures 20a and 20c are needlessly over-complicated. Treating a column as in figures 14b and 14c would have been soooo much easier, whether the rear element is capable of rear-support or not. In other words, columns and double-bases all turn-to-face in the same way, and have the contacts in figures 20a-2 and 20c as illegal contacts (as the flanking elements don’t have their front-corner touching the enemy’s front-corner at the head of the column).

Well, for the context of the Swiss Burgundian Wars I think it is worth a try. It is, after all, merely a house rule.
