Hi
I'm new to this so bear with me (!)
I'm just basing an Aztec army - IV (63) of which one of the options is 5Hd - six of 'em..
They can be based either 30mm or 40mm deep.
40mm looks better I think - but I'm wondering if there is any advantage gametes to the smaller base size?

I think some people don't like the larger base depths because of potential issues when being recoiled, etc..
There are threads discussing this. I will scour and see if I can find them and link them here.
Personally, I go for what looks better, and that usually means a larger base depth.
I use 40mm for my hordes, and 50mm for my chariots.

Sensible people would put em on 30mm as it helps with recoil if you turn to face an enemy on the flank of a line. Not much recoils you but some does.
Un sensible people like me who love the look of a deep base go with 40 x 40 as that is how a proper horde should look
IIRC a fast or solid horde can both be 30 or 40

Mark me inn the "un-sensible" column. I base my hordes on 40mm bases ( They're hordes, after all). Besides it models much better.  |

I put 5Hd and 7Hd on 40x30.
In retrospect, I would probably prefer the 5Hd on a 40x30 and the 7Hd on 40x40 but I like the 7H looking denser.
Looks better that way for me.

I agree with Tony. 7 Hd on a 30mm deep base makes them look better. Think of them as poorly equipped and motivated spearmen.
5Hd will look better on a 30mm base as well for me. Desperate or just plain stupid/ mad. Fast Wb if better maybe?
On a 40mm deep base they could end up looking like a careless artillery crew. “Where’s the gun?”
On a different note I recently purchased a Pictish army. The painter based the 4Wb on a 20mm deep base with 5 figures.
I think it looks great and may well now do my Gallic figures the same way.

The 40x30 bases give Fast Hordes that small tactical advantage others have mentioned. And the deeper, 40x40 bases for Solid Hordes give me get that dense, "human wave" look that just seems so right to me. Here's a shot of my Sui Dynasty Chinese, a must-have army for every Horde fancier, for sure.  Note my inability to count. Why take the "seven" in 7Hd literally if nine or ten figures gives a better look? |

Mine are all 30mm deep as my bases go back to DBA 1 and I will not be rebasing. If the difference in depth is being guided by recoil situations why worry about hordes?
"Hordes Destroyed by Knights or Elephants if in good going, or by Warband. Recoil if shot at. If neither, no effect."

Bob, see Baldie's comment above. 'Tis a rare situation, but can occasionally happen. I figure my Solid Hordes will almost never "hard-flank" anyone, so their deeper bases won't matter.

As I'm a good boy, and do whatever Mr Barker tells me, all my Horde are on 40x30mm bases I know what you mean, of course, but PB does allow the 40x40 option, so all my Solid Hordes have been put into the "Federal Horde Enhancement Program", and have slowly been upgraded to deeper bases, with add'l, freshly painted figures, of course! |
