Being in lock-down and trawling for solo games on the internet I came across a company called Beserker Games. They specialise in producing solo board games.
As they are print and play and therefore need some outlay on ink and card/paper at around £15 per game they are good quality excellent rules and great replay-ability. The game I purchased I printed out and had ready to play in about an hour and a half.
I took the plunge and purchased "Aces of Valour" a solo game set in WW1. You are the commander of a Royal Flying Corp Squadron on the Western Front or if you wish you can lead a German Imperial Air Service Squadron, Lafayette or American Air Service.
You select 8 Fighter Aircraft for your Squadron out of those available. Aircraft range from early to late war. You also select two two-seater aircraft (BE2C's) for the British.
You select your campaign lenght, 8, 12, or 24 missons.
Missions are selected from a large deck of cards, the mission card tells you your target and where it is to be found. It also details what aircraft you are expected to send.
The amount of fuel you have is represented by the duration of your aircraft expressed in mission turns, for example an early war DH2 has 22 mission turns a later war SE5A has 24.
You fly your aircraft to the target on a wonderfully rendered grid map. each mission turn roll roll dice to see if an event occurs, the odds of an event depend where you are on the map. Events include one of your flight experiencing engine failure, coming across enemy aircraft, ground targets or ground fire.
Ground attack and air combat is handled in a very different and exciting way which hinges on how much initiative you have or may not have over your enemy.
The game involves downed aircrew returning home, damaged aircraft crash landing away from an airfield, and whether yo risk your best pilots on a mision or save them for later. Also some of the targets you have to attack are out of the range of your aircraft! So you have to plan your way-points so you can get back to a nearer friendly airfield.
Missions include Trench Strafing, Balloon defense or busting, photo recon, offensive patrols, airfield, artillery attacks etc.
A very well thought out and designed solo game.
The games this company produce range from ancient history, land, naval and air, all solo. I am currently attracted to a game around the Zulu wars!
They can be found here www.berserkergames.net/index.html.
Really worth a look. Also many of the games would be great as way of running a solo campaign using miniatures as the system would handle the oppositions strategy for you.
