Today's objective was to play DBA over Skype (other video conferencing software is available). We placed a tablet face down on a music stand to provide the remote player with a good view of the board. On said tablet I could see, my opponent, what he could see and the result from a dice rolling app. The music stand gave us plenty of scope to move the camera to get the right view and of course I could manhandle the tablet for close ups on request.
What to play? The battle of the elephants of course! II/19b Seleucid vs II/30b Galatians on a maximum size board.
My opponent chose to be Antiochus, so I led the Galatians.
The Seleucids chose the battle ground. A two deep block of four pikes set up on the far downward facing slope of a gentle hill, with an elephant and horde on its left and a solid auxilia and two Psiloi on its right, the Psiloi just ahead of a small wood. Antiochus, a second unit of knights and scythed chariot set up behind on the hilltop.
I placed five units of solid warband and a solid blade opposite the pikes between a wood on my left and a hamlet on my right. Two units of cavalry started out right beyond the hamlet. Two units of my own Psiloi, a scythed chariot of my own and my General in a light chariot deployed behind my centre.
Antiochus did not hang about, his battle line headed straight ahead except for the Psiloi who stepped wide to permit the scythed chariot to join them. Antiochus and the Knights headed straight over towards the flank where the Galatian cavalry waited.
The Galatians shuffled around to line double warband facing the solid auxilia, blade and double warband facing pikes and the loan warband left facing down the elephant stepped right into the hamlet.
Antiochus stuck to the plan. The battle line continued dead ahead and Antiochus and company closed in on the cavalry. The Galatians brought Psiloi into the gap between the warband to face the elephant and another Psiloi to close the gap on the left flank between double warband and the wood.
Antiochus charged his pike and auxilia home and the horde went forward to place both Galatian Psiloi and warband in the BUA in threat zone. Early success saw his leftmost pikes destroy one of the warband against them and follow through. The battle raged in the centre for ages with the single warband standing its ground against double pikes for ages. The Seleucid Psiloi came forward to shore up their right flank, whilst the scythed chariot and elephant moved off to the left to support their general, who was now tussling with the Galatian cavalry.
The Galatian Psiloi threatened by the horde, backed off and then shot left into the woods to counter the Seleucid Psiloi. This left a gap for the Seleucid scythed chariot to zoom through to support the double pikes against the loan warband. The Galatians sent their stolen scythed chariot in against it. How often do you see SCh on SCh action? The warband in the hamlet backed off to provide flank support.
The critical combat was SCh on SCh with the tally still only 1-0 to Antiochus.
The more experienced drivers won, the Seleucid chariot followed through, the loan warband against the pikes now 6-1 down finally succumbed and Antiochus and the remaining knights now supported by elephants destroyed both Galatian cavalry for a 4-0 plus scythed chariot victory!
An hour or so's fun, a virtual handshake and an agreement to repeat another weekend.
