Getting ready to finish up three elements of turcopolen for my in progress DBA/BBDBA Teutonics.
Having a bit of trouble finding a solid reference for the shields.
I see decals for black tau or Maltese crosses on white fields mixed with them on grey fields. I also see armies where they are just painted with varying colors and no device.
My Osprey just covers the knights.
Anyone have anything solid?
When it comes to the Military Orders, some people get carried away with paint schemes and equipment - particularly with the Teutonic Knights...

Have a read of the “northern crusades “ great book, I’ve done geometric on some shields when I quickly dug through my pile o lead this morning to check, I believe I got my colour schemes after reading.

What you have to ask yourself is "what would Hollywood do"?

Interesting, vodnik, hadn't thought of that. Presumably then the men kept their own 'device/designs' rather than being given them by their employer.
Will have to see if I can pick up 'THe Northern Crusades.'

Pick em up cheap on eBay or second hand book shops, just grab a second edition though, some things were revised when archaeologists shed more light on this history.

Assuming that these 'Turcopolen' were present in the Middle East only, they were likely to reflect local practice. As to the Order troops, these were subject to strict rules as to the devices that they were allowed to bear. These rules were often ignored by the Bruder, who could be heavily fined if the authority had a mind to. Crusaders obviously bore their own arms. Sergeants and other foot soldiers were required to have some form of grey coverall (like) a cheap sort of surcoat I guess with the Tau cross and NEVER any other sort of cross. But as others say- Hell! 'Turcopolen' paint em how you like. They were not part of the order.

That was the origial question for me, redrob, did the Teutonic turkopolen carry a shield with a device indicating their service or were they left up to their own 'devices???'
For my Templar and Hospitaller mercenary foot and turcopoles in the Middle East I just did a corner of the shields with the appropriate cross with mixed colors on the rest of their equipment as they were not members of the Orders themselves.
For the other Teutonics (aside from the Pruss) I'll follow the Order's specifications.
