Thinking about basing figs and noticed that most 8xx troops are 40mm depth. I know that heavy infantry, pikes, Spears, blades etc now can have either 15 or 20mm base depth which I quite like. 15mm depth is just too fiddle in the table top
BUT 8Sp has a base depth of only 30mm. Is this as mistake? Should it be 30-40? Does it really matter at all? I figured it wouldn’t matter that much but wanted to see if anyone had had any kind of issue. They are still going to recoil 1/2 a base depth at any rate.

If a 40mm deep unit at the end of a line, say, gets contacted on the flank and has to turn to face, then it won't have any room to recoil as its rear will be right up against its friendly neighbour. A 30mm deep unit will at least have 10mm to recoils so won't be destroyed first time. Cheers, Simon

I think in 15mm scale the 40mm base depth for a double unit is the correct way to go. After all there are advantages in having a double unit otherwise we probably wouldn't consider them. If you have been outflanked the that is unfortunate but in some way you have been party to this predicament anyway. Let's remember DAB is supposed to be a reasonably quick results game. Cheers, Lee.

I don't think it's a mistake; it's 2 x the base depth for Sp, just as for other double bases: 6Bd at 40 mm is 2 x 3Bd at 20mm, 8Bw/Cb/Lb at 40 mm is 2 x 4Bw/Cb/Lb at 20mm, 6Cv at 60mm is 2 x 30 mm, etc.
That said, I don't think there's a problem with using 40 mm for convenience. After all, its main effect in game is detrimental (the recoil space issue Simon mentioned).

Thanks lads.
I was just about to get all snarky and say "but 8Bd has a 40mm deep base.." and then I realized to my horror that it's 6Bd as you pointed out. I still might go with 40mm deep, depending on how many figs I can cram on there. 15mm deep is just a wee bit too tiny for infantry, but perhaps the double base will make them look nice and lined up, even in their silly Theban hats!
