Since getting back into DBA on "discovering" v3.0 recently, I have embarked on the mammoth task of updating my vast collection of armies to have "all options". However, many armies have options that may be seen, rightly or wrongly, as inferior & I worried that I'd be painting up, say, 3 x 7Hd - 21 figures - for my beloved Skythian army & nobody would ever choose them.
So, we thought it might be a good idea to roll probability dice whenever there is an option.
E.g. in the I/43a Skythian list there is a choice between LH, Ps, 7Hd & 3Ax for 3 of the element choices. We could, perhaps, simply roll a d6 for each choice & take the highest. Maybe it could be weighted after the first choice to favour that type?
I already have a table of probability drawn up for 2d6 which could be customised for a choice between 2, 3, 4 or more elements & both of the ideas above could be easily incorporated.
I feel it not only gives the "lesser" elements an outing now & then but reflects the fact that generals could not always get what troops they want & also presents players with a challenge as well as getting used to using the armies differently.
Has anyone else already tried this or any other way of randomly generating the elements in a given army?
Regards,
j

Don't underestimate Hordes in 3.0!! Simon That's part of it. Because they have never been used in our group, except in HotT, & the fact that they cost +1PIP & are not well understood, they are assumed to be "lesser" & are therefore never chosen. If there was a possibility of having to use them because of the semi-random choice, they get a outing & we all have to figure out ways to use them & counter them. Regards, j

Hordes can be surprisingly resilient and with a pursuit move of 1BW enemy troops can fall into a threat zone at a most un-welcome moment.

Has anyone else already tried this or any other way of randomly generating the elements in a given army? Regards, j If I am playing a non-historical solo game and I have the options for a particular army, I almost always randomly determine the army composition. I find it helps me get a feel for all the wrinkles that an army can have on the field.
I also will not limit it to just randomly picking for the options.
For example, with the 1/51 Assyrians, after picking the mandatory HCh General, I roll for each troop type on the list, (say 1-3 it stays, 4-6 it gets replaced with one of the options, and keep going down the list until I have 12 elements.

Don't underestimate Hordes in 3.0!! Simon Indeed....embrace the hordes!!! They go willingly to their own slaughter, pursue annoyingly, pin down opponents and cost zilch when casualties. What’s not to like ?

Embrace those Skythian hordes because you get to paint up some Skythian warrior women in the 7Hd - so lots of detail and colourful costumes. Use sabot basing with 3 Skythian Ax on one base and 4 more on a 7Hd base and you can get 3 x 3Ax and 3 x 7Hd for just 21 figures. Would I ever use them - absolutely given that LH heavy armies are useless in DBA 3.0 RAW so the Hd do add something to the army. Pin with the Hd and flank with the LH!

Where can I buy the figures for Skythian warrior women? Atm I am using Saxon figures for Skythian hordes & I really need some variety. Btw we are currently experimenting with the 1/2 PIP LH move & we're finding it does give a filip to those poor old things... Regards, j

Xyston make the only Skythian warrior women I know about.
1/2 PIP for LH does seem to work - but regrettably real life is preventing me from playtests at the moment.
