As far as I can see, the rules say that a City, Fort or Camp can be in contact with the front edges of up to 3 Assaulting elements. The Defender fights each Assaulting element seperately in succession, each Combat counting others still in contact as a Tactical Factor. Combats cease when the Defender is Destroyed or all Assaulting elements have fought”
Ok so far, but does this mean that an attacker can’t actually make contact with more than 3 elements, then choose which elements are assaulting in that bound?
This came up not so long ago as my opponent wanted to contact with 5 elements (all Sp as it happens, each element with CF4 being unable to count flank support vs my garrison of Sp at CF4 +4 for Fort, -2 for his extra elements = CF6) his reasoning being that the extra elements would already be in place next bound so that, if any of those assaulting Sp had to recoil as a combat outcome, he would already have 2 x Sp in contact & so would need less PIPs to get back into the fray with maximum effect. BTW he was really determined to take this fort & was advancing more elements towards it.
It seemed a bit cheesy to me but I couldn’t think of a valid reason to deny his interpretation other than the feeling that it should not be that easy to coordinate so many simultaneous assaults & wtf were the extra elements doing in the first combat, playing cards? I pinted to the “3 assaulting elements” bit but he reasoned that it didn’t actually say he couldn’t contact with more.
Anyway, it has added to the reasons that I don’t feel like choosing cities/forts but as the same rule applies to camps & can’t get away with using one, I’d like to clear this up.
