I tried a tactic in the NADBAG Open 2.2 tournament at Recruits in Lee's Summit, MO.
I picked a low aggression army with lots of LH (II/58 Alan), and placed a large woods in the center of the board. Opponents set up on both sides to prevent my LH from getting to their camp. No matter how they pushed, they had to either leave their camp with too little defense, or separate their army. I found fighting in a "donut" of good going was much easier than a wide open field. The speed of LH was much more apparent when Kn could be stranded on the other side of the battle in a turn.
I chose a LH general because I think the +1 to them is more powerful for them combined with the quick kills. Plus my general was able to keep up with my army anywhere they struck. I've had great success with splitting the battlefield with something to break the generals command distance. I think it's overlooked far too often. Troops that can make additional moves (LH, or Ps) or troops that don't require many pips to engage (Bw, WWg, Art) seem to work well.
I didn't win every match, but I did well enough to win with 3-1.

Excellent... A very clever tactic.
Food for thought.

It could work well for Numidians too or other LH armies with a few Ps which could tie troops up in the central terrain or dash out to add flank support or assail exposed flanks(if safe enough).

But what if your LH army can't conveniently field a Wood? (Like most LH armies that have Steppe as their home terrain?)
I can see myself placing that huge edifice (temple modelled on very steep hill) in the middle of the table very soon...although I don't have Alans or other LH armies with Aggression 1...

This was 2.2, so I got to place the terrain and the attacker rolled for sides. But placing in the center, I was sure of it's placement no matter which way the board was facing.
A steep hill in the center of bad going and the crest blocks line of sight just as well, at least in 2.2

An edifice is the best option to simulate this for Steppe armies in v3.0 (no difficult hills allowed). But there is zero guarantee of getting that edifice in or near the centre of the battlefield in 3.0. (Probably a good thing really.)
Why didn't your opponents just stay back near their camp and let you come to them?

In the final match my opponent did, but when I rolled six pips, it left six LH on the end of his line and he was unable to respond before i overwhelmed him. But it did take the woods out of the picture.

Perhaps your other opponents felt compelled to attack because they were the 'invaders'.

Why didn't your opponents just stay back near their camp and let you come to them? Just checked the placing terrain rules and as it reads a BUA such as an edifice counts as an area feature so must be placed entirely in one quarter. So it would be much the same for Steep hill or woods... this means the terrain isn't exactly bang center of the battlefield but slightly off set.

I know. These games were using 2.2.

I know. These games were using 2.2. It looks like in 3.0 that some sort of "fix" was required to stop terrain features being places in one or more sectors.... only Plough, Gentle Hills, Rivers, Roads and Waterways get to cross a quarter line.
