I have done 16 Parthian cataphracts and while they look quite good, they are also rather dark overall. Any ideas on how to lighten up silver/gold.bronze paint without making it matte?

Presuming you dry brushed with Chainmail, can you further drybrush it with something lighter? GW Mithril Silver or Shining Gold, for example.

I used a variety of craft paints and a couple metallics from Golden. I mixed some white in the silver, dry-brushed and then lightly dry-brushed again with silver. You can see the results in the who's painting what thread. Good enough for my purposes.

They look absolutely fine too me too. Are you sure you want to lighten them up?

What type of primer did you use? White or black? A common problem with black primer (I think) is that the overall effect, not surprisingly, can be sometimes be rather dark. I'm generally a white-primer guy, but for my III/15 Tibetans (also Khurasan), I thought I'd try the black primer method. --All those klankers, right? As others have already suggested, I drybrushed with a metallic silver to show off the chainmail. I first applied white paint to the horses' tails and other bit fabric, etc., before painting them their intended colors. Tedious, for sure, but I was pleased the final effect (below).

Gray primer but then a black coat. Perhaps should have just gone with the grey.
