I seem to recall them being treated as fast for combat purposes but could not for the life of me find it during last night's game. It was of import because a light cavalry unit got a tie attacking the camp. If they recoiled, The camp didn't have to fight on the next bound. We settled it with a die roll and the units remained in contact. On the next bound the camp followers rolled lousy dice and the Huns looted the camp, small beer since their army morale collapsed shortly afterwards.
I seem to be incapable of finding rule details when in the midst of a game.

Troop Definitions, page 3, second paragraph, third sentence - 'Camp followers and city denizens are not included in the allowed total of 12 elements, but are extra elements of armed civilians of no specific troop type, but which if they sally count as "Solid" foot for movement and "Fast" for combat.'
Presumably the "Fast" designation holds for combat when in camp as well.
But then???

Thank you, gents. I was frustrated by that and also adjudicating some flank contacts that were not covered in the diagrams in the rules. Some time later this year we may give Basic Impetus a look. Those rules can be very dicey, but allow all armed with missile weapons to shoot (something I miss) and tend to be less fussy about contacts and such.

All troops armed with missile weapons in DBA shoot. The range varies:) I have played Impetus and found it too complicated for my simple mind. The company does make excellent troop trays.

For what its worth I have specifically created A Game of Knights & Knaves so that we can innovate with DBX mechanics and so continue to compete with Triumph, Impetus, the French Game, Kings of War etc.
(Contact/conforming is not the fussy in DBA 3.0 - only the presentation makes it seem so.)
So please don't give up on DBX until you've tried Knights & Knaves - human readable and open evolving (with an engaged author). Locally I've managed to hold off the competitors and bring most of the Field of Glory crew.
