fanaticus-dba.fandom.com/wiki/FAQ_2019_1st_QuarterThis bit confuses me: If only the front of the spears can contact the rear corner of the cav (which I take to mean that there is no spear-front-to-cav-rear contact nor spear-front-to-cav-side contact) surely it isn't a valid contact? However, I do see Fig 13d, which shows contact being ok even if it is just on a corner. But this figure confused me even more...where is it explained in the rules?

Yes, it is a valid contact under DBA 3.
It is found in the "Moving into Contact with Enemy" Section...
"A single element contacted by a group conforms to it unless itself entirely in bad and/or rough going in which case the group conforms."
as well of course in Fig. 13d.

This confuses me even more. How does this tally with Figure 10? We play that you have to contact front-corner-to-front-corner and one of the following: front-to-front (with a possible sideways slide); front-to-side; front-to-rear).

We play that you have to contact front-corner-to-front-corner and one of the following: front-to-front (with a possible sideways slide); front-to-side; front-to-rear). Actually, the conforming rules on page 9 says:- “At the end of the bound’s movement phase the contacting conforming element or at least one element of a contacting conforming group must be lined up, either...” So at the end of the movement phase, elements must be lined-up. But sometimes it’s the moving element that must conform, and sometimes the stationary one. (That’s why I crossed out the word ‘contacting’ and replaced it with ‘conforming’) I used to find the conforming rules a bit hard to follow, so I made the following ‘flowchart’. Now it doesn’t confuse me quite as much:- fanaticus.boards.net/post/10469/Some Helpful Downloads can be found here: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And here is the latest Jan 2019 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2019_1st_Quarter

Thanks Stevie. So the mover always has to conform to the static element, unless the mover is a group and the static isn't.

Well...not quite. Page 9, “Moving Into Contact With The Enemy”, 2nd paragraph:- “A single element contacting a single element conforms to it. A single element or group contacting a group conforms to that group. A single element contacted by a group conforms to it unless itself entirely in bad and/or rough going in which case the group conforms.” Just remember that at the end of the movement phase, someone must have conformed. Thanks Stevie. So the mover always has to conform to the static element, unless the mover is a group and the static isn't. Sort of... Terrain plays a factor. Also, the contacting group must contact with its front...not its corner. Joe Collins

Try this it should cover most situations:
"In Movement Phase Elements and Groups may move their front edge into contact with enemy Stands and Groups to instigate Close Combat.
Any front edge contact with an enemy Element will trigger the conforming rules (see below) but not just corner to corner or side edge to side edge contact.
In general the moving Element or Group must attempt to conform as much as possible to the non-moving opponent. There is one exception to this general rule: a single Stand not entirely in Rough/Difficult Going contacted by a Group must attempt to conform to the moving Group."
