j Write to Phil and ask him, or Sue.
In the meantime, I will play Rivers as river going. Not bad, rough or good but something else.

Phil and Sue seem to prefer to let gamers work it out among themselves as individuals. Works for me, I guess.

j Write to Phil and ask him, or Sue. In the meantime, I will play Rivers as river going. Not bad, rough or good but something else. I may be wrong but it is my understanding that Phil doesn't really want to engage with DBA anymore, having moved on & I certainly wouldn't want to disrespect that. I fully understand his desire for us to work it out for ourselves. It's just this damned river question seems so divisive & although a flood of individual questions from strangers would be an unwarranted imposition, it may be that those who have worked closely with him might be able to get an answer without burdening him unduly. Having said that, the next best thing we have to holy scripture is the FAQ team & I hope they will be able to shed some light in the near future. No pressure, guys Until such time, we will either do as you do - neither good nor any other going for combat - or, more likely, just agree not to use rivers. Seems a shame though. In any event, I have great regard for those who post here & have learned much from this forum. Thanks all. Regards, j

Why is it divisive? This may come as a shockig statement, and I don't mean to be a badass, but the FAQ team, the designers, playtesters, Stevie and I with Lessons, ... none of us represents the DBA Papacy! It is a game. Interpret and play it in yhe way that makes the most sense to you. If travelling, and playing in some far off kingdom or Satrapy, play as the locals do. Adjust your game. You will find that you are likely already 95+% aligned, but there might be small regional variations on certain interpretations.
Sports teams that travel are aware that even though (unlike DBA) there is universal agreement on the rules, officials sometimes focus on differing applications.
I see as this as healthy and normal. Some folks might see this as heresy that needs to be stamped out, I guess. Thankfully I have faith that the DBA players ofnthe world are sufficiently mature to just agree to differ in certain areas, and get on with playing a game.
Now if you are a tournament player with your entire identity tied up with perfecting your tactics and winning as many games as possible on the open road, well then you have two choices: learn to adjust your game occasionally at certain away matches, or attempt to stamp out the heretics!!!

That would at least keep me warm this coming winter Martin. But when you say “Burn them all, buuuurn themmmmm 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 😉”... ...do you mean the heretics, or do you mean all the ancient historical accounts that have the audacity to conflict with the holy truth of DBA?

My bad, the word "divisive" was way too strong so apologies for that. I meant to say that it seems to have divided this forum's contributors into two diametrically opposed opinions. I don't play with a wide variety of people & have never been in a tournament but I can see why it may have seemed so. I just mean that, for me at least, I like a set of rules where I know how things should be & of course that's where forums like this help by allowing us all to discuss & be guided (by those with a lot more experience with the game & the historical evidence than I) to the relevant rules. It probably says more about me in that I have been swayed by both sides of the argument many times (& probably will be again) & just can't seem to make up my mind fully. I read each post as it comes out in the hope that I can resolve the issue for myself but the arguments seem to be trapped in a circle on both threads. I'll just have to make up my mind or avoid rivers until I do. Regards, j
