I was thinking about comparing paints. Do you have any thoughts about this?
So far Vallejo are hard to beat. The coverage is great, especially when painting over a black undercoat, even reds and yellows. I've tried Game Colour and Model colour, both are great but the model colour has some great shades for painting ancient minis.
I've tried the Army Painter ink washes and they are great too. Not tried the paints but if they are like the washes they should be good. They are also a little cheaper than Vallejo.
Coat d'Arms, just got some from Essex. Am a bit disappointed, they seem a bit thin and require several coats, although this means you don't have to water them down like the Vallejo paints! I don't know they are ok I suppose.
Games Workshop; great coverage but I resent giving this company any money because of their price gouging!
That's all for now , cheers, Paul 😀

I think you already know the answer. At least as I am concerned, its Vallejo.

Yes, I think so too. Perhaps then not such a great topic to talk about😊

No, still a good topic. I know guys who use craft paints and are happy the results they get!

I like a variety of paints, since every maker seems to have a few colours they do particularly well.
I use a lot of Vallejo, Miniature Paints (if I can get them), some old Games Workshop paints (no idea how the new ones are), and a lot of Lukas paints. In the past, I have also used Plaka, textile paints, Revell enamels, various brands of artist paints. Most of those worked OK and I have no problems with the figures I painted with them years ago.
Mostly Vallejo, because they are good, the range is vast and reliable, and because the local store stocks them. And Lukas, because the local arts store stocks them.

My favourite remains the now discontinued line of Derivan Minis - supposedly designed specifically for painting miniatures.
I acquired most of my selection when the elder of my (not so) little warbands had just started primary school. Many of them have lasted all that time (said eldest child is now nearly 20).
I buy a variety of craft acrylics (lots of Kaiser Kraft, Reno Art and one or two others) so that I have slightly differing shades of several colours
It is hard to get decent metallic silver and gold though
cheers

For me it is a combination of a number of manufacturers as all of the colours that I want were not available from one maker when I first started painting miniatures with acrylics. Of course that situation has changed significantly with the advent of Vallejo. The brands that you find on my painting table include Tamiya, Gunze, Lifecolor, Vallejo (Game, Model and Air Colour), Humbrol, Citadel and Côte d'Arms. All have their pluses and minuses.
David, if you're looking for a good silver and gold check out both the Tamiya and Vallejo offerings. Also, Côte d'Arms, which uses the original Citadel formulation, may be be worth testing.
Cheers,

Of course the 'best paints' are the ones your accustomed to and have spent years getting a measure of their usefulness and effects.
This thread did prompt me to look at an old bottle of almost finished Spartan Red on my paint merry go round though, 36ml! How the ancients managed to construct vessels to hold such a proportions is beyond me and obviously beyond the makers of hobby paints.

Best paints? My vote is Vallejo....but
1) I use a lot of craft paints for generic stuff, not requiring accurate pigments (ie most pre-1800 clothing), plus I have some Coat d’Arms in the arsenal, from previous experiments, plus some GW left overs.....
2) I ain’t no pro painter!

I use a mix of craft paints, Vallejo and Golden. The last is very nice acrylics. My wife is an artist and gets small sample bottles from time to time, which usually end up given to me. They also make a heavy gel with pumice which is fine for base terrain.
I also have some Blick acrylics. Craft paint yellow is a joke, use the good stuff.

I agree that yellow craft paint is not very good, as I am sure you know my experience you have to use several coats.
I have gotten around this by applying a light brown (tan for example), and then apply the yelllow on top of that. I also do this when I want to use gold craft paint.
Gets me to avoid doing several coats.
