We came upon this situation last night. DBA 2.2
3Cv fighting 3Cv, but I managed to close the door with 7Hd. I lost the roll and was forced to recoil. What happens to the flanking 7Hd?
Should the flanking 7Hd on a recoil result:
a. Recoil like any other unit. b. Stay in place, hordes don't recoil c. Unable to recoil, be destroyed
Our initial instinct was to leave it in place, still in contact with the enemy 3Cv. This left questions about whether the 3Cv would have to turn and face the 7Hd after the next movement phase. We finally decided that the 7Hd should recoil because the only rules about them not recoiling are for being the primary contact.
This got me wondering if a SCh would be handled the same way, as they normally never recoil.

Jeff, I do apologize for nobody answering your question. Although not a 2.2 player any more (my gang and I gave up playing 2.2 decades ago as being far too unrealistic, with far too much gamey positional trickery, so we have forgotten everything about it), nonetheless I’ll have a go at answering your question. Yes...I think you’re right. The ONLY time 7Hd recoil from close combat is when they are ‘hard flanking’ an opponent and their friends actually doing the dicing lose the combat (but note that under DBA 3.0, all Hordes will also recoil when they are shot at.. I don’t remember if this is the same in DBA 2.2). One minor point to remember, which stevie’s totally correct comment caused to spring to my mind, is that in v3 there ARE times when the other type of horde, 5Hd, recoil from head to head combat. If there’s a draw against ‘solid foot’, the 5Hd, being ‘fast foot’ will recoil. [ under 2.2, which you asked about, there ARE no 5Hd....that type is the v3 replacement for what used to be, in general, 5Wb. And as stevie says, under 2.2 the 7Hd don’t recoil from shooting IIRC] ....and YES, an SCh on a flank would also recoil if the face to face friendly element lost the fight and was recoiled or destroyed as a result.

Were horde not destroyed if beaten by shooting? I might risk the wildlife under the bed to find the old copy of the 2.2 rules.

here we are: (in DBA 2.2)
Hordes: Destroyed in BUA or camp or by elephants, knights or scythed chariots if in good going, or by warband not in a BUA or camp, or if shot at. If not, no effect.
