Has anybody with matched pairs, thought about offering Skype or Messenger, (video), games, or even worked out a method that could be used?
Thinking about it from the few games I've played, it shouldn't be too hard to set up.
Players connect on the board, game, time/ date, and armies available listed, along with size of board etc. A reply to the offer is made on the board.
The host and opponent connect via pm, email, messenger name, etc.
Then on the date, connect via the Internet, complete formalities of picking the armies, board size, defender, etc.
Camera shoots board on one end, and dice mat and cup at the other end, all dice cast should land on the board or mat.
Play continues as per normal, with the host making the opponents moves as directed.
Perhaps with photo's taken of the dice as it's declared, (can't see why trust would be an issue) , but put it in the rules before you start, rather than argue about it later.
Anyone know of a set up like this, or anybody with matched pairs willing to try?
I'm itching for a game or two, and haven't found a local crew yet.

Seen a fair few games played like it on Youtube but not DBA so far. They have multiple angles on some to show dice tray as well.

I've watched a whole load of Tony and Mitch's games, which was what made me think about connecting and playing via the Internet.
I used to play postal chess too, many years ago, but that was played with a board at each end of the communication link.

Challenge them to a game but i expect it could go on a while having to communicate acivations. Also the precise movement subtletys you need in DBA may be a problem.

You would probably find it difficult to play the game like this because of many measurement subtleties, as written above. If you really had to, then playing in a larger scale (20 or 25/28mm) would be easier, but that would limit your pool of opponents as most I know like to play in 15mm. I expect you could find many other games more suitable for such play - notably the ones with movement across pre-set fields/squares/hexes.
On the other hand and DBA being what it is, it may be more fruitful to put together a few armies and some scenery and harass anyone vaguely interested :-) That's how I started, not too far from you (in Belgrade, Serbia). You may find people in clubs playing other games, historical, fantasy or whatever, who may not have armies, but would be interested.
Good luck!

Thanks hamilcar, there's some ideas in your post that stir my brain to DBA3 with some basic ground/ map additions, going to put my thinking cap on and see what I can come up with.
I'm not giving up on the idea, just rejigging it to possibly make it work, in reality.

I wonder if using the facebook watch party might be a way to go?
Since you can do live video and have members comment throughout, it might be also a good way of doing some DBA tutorials as well!

Play by mail
We all write to each other or better yet send ambassadors to propose moves.
Just need to avoid getting them chucked down wells etc.

Can do but this looks like creating the possibility of an online competition via remote access. A most interesting development although everyone I know agrees that the social aspect of the hobby s important ... but then I go to two clubs and the more solitaire players might not agree.

Had loads of Skype games now works well but you have to be kind when moving saying stuff like a few mill to the left you could put em both in threat zone.

Planning to play a game through Zoom with a friend tomorrow. Will advise on how it works. How did it go? Do you agree with Baldie that it is viable? I confess that so far I am rather underwhelmed by my experiences with it. I am planning to start playing out linked games on Punic War II using C&C: Ancients; the hex grid clarifies any potential ambiguities.

The Dogfather has been doing some work on a simplified board layout that could be used.
Even though we're only 1/2 mile apart, we haven't gotten together to play yet. Covid et al, has slowed us down.
The biggest problem that I can see at the moment with it, is that movements, (including wheeling) occur across the grid, and force conformation to that grid.
Steve has played a few solitaire games and reported a couple on the fb group page. Games have taken between 4 - 8 moves, (paired, being a move and any action/ contact, by both sides, counting as 1 move).
I'm still convinced there may be a simple solution to the complex problem, that we are missing, (because it's just too obvious)!
I think we can avoid having ambassadors thrown down wells by 1) limiting wells to only Sparta and it's opponents, and 2) by not putting water hazards on board game mats!

We have played 15-20 times through Zoom with little issues. I use a computer to show me and my phone is mounted on a tripod to show the board from above. Only issue has been audio feedback at times. This method has kept us actively playing, whereas other games don’t lend themselves to this method. Give it a try!!
