Inspired by fanaticus.boards.net/thread/2060/move-distances-gg-bg-rg , I wonder if players
have considered the following.
A tactical move is voluntary, costs PIPs, and is slowed by rough/bad going (except for Ps/Ax/Wb and fast troops).
A flee move is an involuntary combat outcome, like recoiling, and costs no PIPs.
Now “Fleeing”, page 12 paragraph 6 says:-
“A fleeing element turns 180° in place; then moves straight forward for its full move for the going it starts in.”
So a LH and Cv beaten in bad going will flee 1 BW (and are destroyed if doubled).
In rough going LH recoils as normal if beaten, and flees 1 BW if doubled (unless destroyed by certain enemies).
If LH starts in good going it will flee 4 BW, and is not slowed by rough or bad going (see page 12 paragraph 7).
However, “Fleeing”, page 12 paragraph 7 says:-
“(Fleeing) stops before completing its move and lines up if its front-edge (or front corner) contacts any of:
(a) enemy (whom it will fight next bound),
(b) friends it cannot pass through (as specified on page 9),
(c) a city, fort or camp,
(d) a waterway, or
(e) for troops other than Psiloi or Light Horse, any bad going except marsh it is not already at least partly in.”
So all troops that start in good going flee through rough going at full speed, and LH that start in good going flee
through bad going at full speed, as do troops fleeing into a marsh (Ps always flee at full speed in any terrain).
Troops other than Ps and LH will halt rather than try to enter bad going other than marshes.
But note that item (e) above makes no exception for Ax, Wb and fast troops...if these start in good going
they must halt if their flee move contacts any bad going (other than a marsh).
In other words, Ax, Wb and fast troops can only flee into a marsh, and not other types of bad going.
Of course, all this is pretty academic, as in a normal 12 element game, Ax, Wb and fast foot never flee.
But they do in Big Battle DBA, if their command is broken.
