I finally was able to pull off my first play test fight of Clontarf.
Still to finish... A small bit of ocean... final touches/highlighting on my Viking ship... An additional Viking command stand... rebasing two Viking stands (bringing them up to current standards... though the old basing isn't really bad). The walls of Dublin... ok Dublin was probably off the battlefield... but I am going to do a small fort at the bridge over the Tolka river.
The battle features an 18 stand Irish army with one Irish ally Vs... a 15 stand Irish army with two Viking allies (Brodir and the boys... Sigtrygg of Dublin). One command per side.
Special rules... Bitter Fight: Both sides increase their break point by 1... so, 7 for Brian Boru and 5 for the Rebels. The Irish Ally, Máel Sechnaill is only activated on a roll of 6 by Brian... or when the enemy moves within 2 BW of his elements.
Sigtrygg start across the river. His other two Viking stands start with the army. He starts out of command. It takes at least 3 turns to get him to the army out of Dublin.
Aux recoil 1 BW from Bd.
The battle... This one turned into a wild melee... Brian's Irish ally never entered the battle. Sigtrygg left the confines of Dublin, but never got into the battle. In a tense match the Rebels were able to win by 1 element...
Thoughts...
The Aux retreat rule works very well. It allows a longer survival for the Auxilia... which allows them to outflank with superior numbers. I am look forward to fighting this again... both as a Historical Battle DBA game and as a standard sized game.

Looking forward to reading more Joe, especially how you tackle the standard size game. I have been interested in developing a standard DBA refight after reading that excellent article in Slingshot a while back.

Joe, did you ever revisit this historical scenario? And, have you worked it up as a std-sized game? Khurasan's new Norse-Irish are on the way. I'd enjoy presenting a "Clontarf" scenario to our group this autumn.

I am having camera issues so photos are scarce. I will however share the on with you tomorrow. Joe Collins

Joe, as I work on the "Brian Boru" CP (Gen) element for my III/46 Norse-Irish ( Khurasan), I thought I'd ask if your "Battle of Clontarf" scenario is something you would be willing and able to post here to share with the rest of us? I would enjoy presenting your scenario with our local DBA group.

Joe Collins Friendly follow-up on my request to see your Clontarf scenario. I don't think I've seen a copy as yet. But, my humble apologies in advance if you've already sent it my way. Thanks!

Ack!!!...I had completely forgotten. I will work on this next week. Thanks! You're more than excused if you forgot this over the past year. (I had too.) A lot has happened on this planet since last December. A lot. So, no rush. Just glad I hadn't received it and misplaced it somehow. (Grins.)

Well, as another excuse I also have been working on different publishing project since then. One that I am beginning to despair of ever finishing. I need to get back to DBA. Joe Collins

I just finished my 4 board Clontarf battlefield ( 240x60) and gota say it looks bloody good I’ve got 48 stands vs 48 stands with Brian’s forces arranged R-Las a 14 stand,12stands,12stands and 10 stands for the iffy allied Irish The armies have some alterations to normal list to fit as best known the troops present They face L-R 10 stands Dublin danes, 16 stands from leinster, 12 stands of Vikings from different abodes and 10 stands Norse mercenaries Used the map from an old strategy and tactics game Clontarf as a key to creating a to scale battlefield The forces are set up Plenty of chrome such as the 2 “ camps” aka longships on junction of the surf and beach , CP Generals x2 !! For Irish being Brian Boro and the allies facing the Dublin Danes , no one’s sure if they even arrived , arrived and left or arrived and fought Flooded river that effects Viking blades only Higher army rout levels and optional regrouping aka bringing back an eliminated stand pending different factors And nominated pip dice for the different armies aka can nominate who gets highest pip roll down to worst but remains entire game See how it plays tonight
